| ORGANIZATION'S MISSION AND SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITIES | FORM 990, PART III, LINE 1 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION SALT LAKE FILM SOCIETY'S MISSION IS TO EDUCATE, ADVOCATE, AND INFORM ABOUT AND THROUGH CINEMA. PROMOTE DIVERSITY THROUGH FILM EXHIBITION AND CREATION. FOSTER FILM TALENT AND CULTIVATE FILM APPRECIATION AND PARTICIPATION. THE PROGRAMS AND VENUES ENSURE THAT THE POTENT IDEAS AND VOICES OF FILM ARE ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE IN OUR COMMUNITY. FORM 990, PART III, LINE 3 - SIGNIFICANT CHANGES 2020 was a monumental program and change year for Salt Lake Film Society. SLFS has and will continue to focus its time and resources on the services it can provide despite these challenges. The Broadway and Tower venues were shuttered March 13, 2020 because of the public health threat of COVID-19 and remained so the entire remainder of 2020. In response to venue shutdowns SLFS made some rather large readjustments in 2020. In order to continue serving the community, SLFS pivoted its service offerings into three main areas. First, SLFSathome which created a virtual theatrical experience online. Second, Studio Backlot Motor Cinema created an outdoor cinema drive-in experience. Third, Cultural Film Tours with features such as artist panel discussions which were held virtually. FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4 - PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS 2020 was a monumental program and change year for Salt Lake Film Society. SLFS has and will continue to focus its time and resources on the services it can provide despite these challenges. The Broadway and Tower venues were shuttered March 13, 2020 because of the public health threat of COVID-19 and remained so the entire remainder of 2020. This reduced earned revenue by 93% and significantly cut the operating budget for the following year of 2021. The future continues to be uncertain. When SLFS will be able to safely and fully reopen appears to be many months in to 2021. Effects on the film industry, including slowing film production and distribution may also delay reopening. In response to venue shutdowns SLFS made some rather large readjustments in 2020. In order to continue serving the community, SLFS pivoted its services into three main areas: 1. The creation of SLFSathome, an innovation project creating a virtual theatrical experience online. This presents the same diversity and quality of film usually exhibited in our bricks-and-mortar venues. SLFS is able to offer new, repertory, international, and award-winning films to the community despite the pandemic. Through this platform free programs, interactive and educational materials to supplement films, and ongoing new titles are available to everyone. 2. The creation of the Studio Backlot Motor Cinema, our newest (and semi-permanent) outdoor cinema, drive-in experience which ran for 6 weeks in late summer 2020. This program featured repertory titles, feel-good classics, and films made by Utah filmmakers. These evenings featured special guests, community emcees, entertainers, and fresh-made concessions. This popular event, which often sold out, provided much-needed fun and levity in the way that only communal arts and experiences can. This program will return in the spring and fall of 2021. 3. The growth and expansion of Cultural Film Tours. SLFS is including new minority groups and important world issues into its programming. Even prior to venue closures, SLFS was steadily growing the depth and breadth of its annual cultural tour offerings. Filmexico, Mexican film tour, Czech That Film, Screendance, Israeli Film Tour all soon to be joined by L'Chaim Jewish Film Tour, Masima, Pacific Island Film Tour, and the IEA: Climate Change Film Tour. All cultural tours in 2020 (Filmexico) were held virtually via the SLFSathome platform, and planning in 2020 was well underway for the Screendance, Masima, IEA, and L'Chaim tours that will launch spring of 2021. Through these cultural tours, SLFS created artists discussions virtually, producing 12 artists panels, including 4 for the 2021 January Sundance Film Festival. These panels tackled topics artists in our cultural tours tackle such as race, identity, animation struggles, Mexican cinema and women, as well as the climate/environment, autism, and the power of music to change lives. If circumstances allow, some of the tours may become hybrid virtual/live events or be offered fully in-person. Once venues reopen, all cultural tours will again be offered as live events with some or all of their content offered via our online platform as well. The inclusion of representatives from each minority or issue-based group ensures that these programs offer relevant content and effective outreach. By working with target community representatives from the very inception of these programs there is inherent collaboration and buy-in which increases audience participation and improves outcomes. Through all these services SLFS strives to enlighten the entire community, especially engaging minority groups who might not have access to films that represent their culture, language, or traditions. SLFS film programs are curated to not only engage and entertain but to raise awareness, create conversation, and help people find meaningful connections to others. By providing additional content such as panel discussions and pre-recorded Q&A's with artists and filmmakers, SLFS films bring high-quality arts experiences to the community despite the limitations of quarantine. |
