1 OPERATED HAYES ARBORETUM, OPEN TO THE PUBLIC JANUARY - DECEMBER OF EACH YEAR. IN FY 2021, WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO KEEP THE GROUNDS OPEN FOR HIKING AND A PHASED RE-OPENING OF OUR BUILDING CONSISTENT WITH THE STATE, LOCAL AND FEDERAL GUIDELINES AND ORDERS THAT THAT GREATLY RESTRICTED MOVEMENT AND ACCESS IN THIS PERIOD. IN THE MARCH-MAY PERIOD, WE ARRANGED FOR A CONTRACTOR TO INSULATE AND INSTALL METAL SIDING ON OUR NATURE CENTER THAT GREATLY IMPROVES BOTH ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS OVER THE LONG TERM. ON APRIL 17TH, 2021 WE PARTIALLY RE-OPENED OUR NATURE CENTER TO VISITORS AND ON JUNE 12TH, 2021 RE-OPENED OUR RENTAL VENUES OF OUR WOODLAND CHAPEL, BRICE E. HAYES MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN AND ANNEX. OUR NEWLY DOUBLE CHIP AND SEALED AUTO TOUR (AN UPGRADE FROM GRAVEL SURFACES) RE-OPENED IN REVENUE OPERATION (5 PER CAR) ON JUNE 17TH, 2021. DURING THE BUSY MOWING SEASON FROM APRIL 15TH TO OCTOBER 15TH,, WE MOW ABOUT 60 ACRES PER WEEK. WE MAINTAIN THE BRICE E. HAYES MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN, 233,865
2 NATURALIST/PROGRAM COORDINATOR WAS EMPLOYED ON A PART-TIME BASIS WITH AMPLE VOLUNTEER HELP IN THE EDUCATIONAL AND OUTREACH ACTIVITIES. FOR THE FIRST 9 MONTHS OF THE FISCAL YEAR (JULY 1ST, 2020 THROUGH MARCH 30TH, 2021, OUR PROGRAMMING WAS PRIMARILY VIRTUAL THROUGH THE TRADITIONAL SOCIAL MEDIA VENUES (FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM, ETC.) AND THROUGH SELF-LED ACTIVITIES AT THE ARBORETUM. IN TERMS OF QUANITFYING VISITS TO THE ARBORETUM, WE HAD PURCHASED A COUNTER THAT TRACKS VISITS IN 3 STRATEGIC LOCATIONS - ENTRANCE TO OUR EAST SIDE TRAILHEAD TRAILS (FOR WALKING, HIKING, RUNNING, DOG-WALKING AND MOUNTAIN-BIKING), THE ENTRANCE TO OUR FRONT GATES AT 801 ELKS ROAD AND THE ENTRANCE TO OUR NATURE CENTR BUILDING. A STATISICAL REVIEW OF THE ENTRANCE TO OUR EAST SIDE TRAILHEAD, SHOWS AN AVERAGE OF 42.2 VISITS PER DAY FOR THE FISCAL YEAR PERIOD OR 15,403 VISITS DURING THE PERIOD WITH A PEAK OF 64 VISITS DURING THE MONTH OF APRIL, 2021. VISITS ARE ADJUSTED TO SHOW THAT ONE VISIT = A PEDESTRIAN ENTRANCE AND 22,472
3 2021 ARBQUEST SUMMER CLASSES OUR IN-PERSON NATURE EDUCATION AND WOODCARVING CLASSES WERE CONTEMPLATED, BUT IN MARCH, 2021, WE HAD TO MAKE THE DIFFICULT DECISION, WITH AN ABUNDANCE OF CAUTION, TO DEFER THE IN-PERSON CLASSES FOR ANOTHER SUMMER AS THE OUTCOME OF COVID-19 AND OUR ABILITY TO CONDUCT SAFE IN-PERSON CLASSES THAT TAKE PLACE IN JUNE AND JULY OF EACH YEAR WAS UNCLEAR. ON A MORE POSITIVE EDUCATIONAL NOTE IN 2021, WE CUSTOMARILY HOST THIRD GRADE READING ACADEMY (WE HAD SINCE 2007, BUT THE PROGRAM WAS VIRTUALLY CONDUCTED IN 2020). THE THIRD GRADE READING ACADEMY (NOW KNOWN AS THE READING ACADEMY) SELECED HAYES ARBORETUM TO BE THEIR ONLY OFF-SITE LOCATION (OTHER THAN HIBBERD SCHOOL IN RICHMOND) TO HOST THEIR CLASS THIS YEAR. FROM JUNE 2, 2021 THROUGH JUNE 30, 2021, WE HOSTED 2 TEACHERS AND 12 RISING 3RD GRADERS AT THE ARBORETUM FOR A FUN-FILLED MONTH OF LEARNING. IN LIEU OF IN-PERSON CLASSES, OUR NATURALIST TEAM DEVISED THE EXPLORER PACKET 2021 CONCEPT. IT IS A PACKET OF NOMINALLY-P 746
