| FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION | THE CITIZENS CAMPAIGN IS DEDICATED TO REPAIRING OUR DEMOCRACY FROM THE BOTTOM UP BY TRAINING CITIZENS IN NO BLAME POLITICS AND EVIDENCE-BASED PROBLEM SOLVING TOGETHER, THESE CITIZEN LEADERS WILL BE A NEW FORCE EMPOWERED TO CHANGE THE POLITICAL CLIMATE AND INCREASE OUR CAPACITY TO MEET THE NATION'S CHALLENGES |
| FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4A | THIS PAST YEAR OF 2020 WAS A CHALLENGING ONE FOR THE CITIZENS CAMPAIGN. LIKE THE REST OF OUR COUNTRY, WE FACED THE TREMENDOUS IMPACTS OF THE WORLDWIDE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. HOWEVER, WE MET THESE CHALLENGES; WE MADE REQUIRED ACCOMMODATIONS AND CONTINUED TO FIND SUCCESS IN OUR WORK TRAINING CITIZENS TO BECOME NO-BLAME PROBLEM SOLVERS ABLE TO PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE DECISION-MAKING PROCESSES OF OUR GOVERNMENT, ALL LEADING TO THE BETTERMENT OF OUR COMMUNITIES AND OUR COUNTRY. SOME OF OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS ADVANCING OUR PROGRAM OF CITIZEN LEADERSHIP THIS YEAR INCLUDE: CIVIC TRUSTS - OUR COMMUNITY-BASED CITIZEN LEADERSHIP GROUPS PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR CITIZENS TRAINED IN NO-BLAME PROBLEM SOLVING TO PUT THEIR TRAINING TO WORK, FINDING SOLUTIONS TO ISSUES IN THEIR COMMUNITIES' THEY IDENTIFY AS MOST PRESSING. CIVIC TRUSTS CONTINUE TO OPERATE SUCCESSFULLY IN NEWARK, PERTH AMBOY, TRENTON, PLAINFIELD, PATERSON, AND PHILADELPHIA. CIVIC TRUSTEES SHOWED AMAZING RESILIENCE AND TRUE LEADERSHIP WHEN COVID-19 HIT. MOVING THEIR MONTHLY SOLUTION SESSIONS ONLINE, THEY QUICKLY DEVELOPED A BEAT COVID POLICY FOR CITIES TO ADDRESS UNIQUELY URBAN CHALLENGES IN THE FIGHT AGAINST THE CORONA VIRUS. THEY CREATED "DAILY ACTIVITY" INFECTION PREVENTION GUIDES IN ENGLISH AND SPANISH AND ENLISTED THE MAJOR COMMUNICATION CENTERS OF THEIR RESPECTIVE CITIES (SCHOOL DISTRICTS, HOUSING AUTHORITIES, HOSPITALS, ETC.) TO COMMUNICATE CONSISTENT GUIDANCE WITH ONE VOICE TO ALL CITY RESIDENTS. WORKING WITH DR. STANLEY WEISS, A TOP EPIDEMIOLOGIST FROM RUTGERS MEDICAL SCHOOL AND A MEMBER OF THE CITIZENS CAMPAIGN LAW & POLICY TASK FORCE, THE TRUSTEES NEXT BUILT A 'QUARANTINE KIT' WITH MASKS, DISINFECTANTS, DISPOSABLE GLOVES AND HAND SANITIZERS FOR URBAN RESIDENTS WHO TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID-19 BUT COULD NOT QUARANTINE IN A HOTEL ROOM OR BEDROOM WITH PRIVATE BATH. NEXT, NOTING THE LOW RESPONSE RATE TO THE CALLS OF CONTACT TRACERS, THE TRUSTEES DEVELOPED THE IDEA OF "COMMUNITY CONNECTORS- AND MOUNTED A "TAKE THE CALL" PROMOTION CAMPAIGN THAT RECRUITED TRUSTED COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS TO ADVISE THEIR CONSTITUENTS THAT ANSWERING THE 'CONTACT TRACER CALL' WOULD HELP PROTECT THEM, THEIR FAMILIES, AND THEIR CITY. CIVIC TRUSTEES ALSO ADDRESSED PUBLIC SAFETY ISSUES ARISING FROM THE TRAGIC DEATH OF GEORGE FLOYD. WORKING WITH MEMBERS OF THE CITIZENS CAMPAIGN'S LAW & POLICY TASK FORCE, THEY DEVELOPED A "CHANGE OF CULTURE" POLICING REFORM POLICY THAT EVIDENCE SHOWS NOT ONLY DRASTICALLY REDUCES EXCESSIVE USE OF FORCE INCIDENTS, BUT ALSO DECREASES POLICE OFFICER INJURIES AND SAVES MILLIONS OF DOLLARS FROM MAJOR REDUCTIONS IN THE DAMAGES AND SETTLEMENT COSTS OF USE OF FORCE LAWSUITS. IN SUMMARY, IN THIS MOST CHALLENGING YEAR, MORE THAN 100 CIVIC TRUSTEES PARTNERED WITH CITY OFFICIALS TO ACHIEVE EFFECTIVE POLICING REFORM AND BETTER CONTROL THE CORONA VIRUS. AND CITY OFFICIALS IN EVERY TRUST CITY WELCOMED THE HELP OF THE TRUSTEES AND THEIR PRACTICAL COST-EFFECTIVE EVIDENCE-BASED SOLUTIONS. ALSO, WE CONTINUED MOVING FORWARD WITH OFFERING OPPORTUNITIES TO ALL CITIZENS ON A NATIONWIDE BASIS TO BECOME CITIZEN LEADERS. WE BUILT AN INTERACTIVE PORTAL TO PROVIDE TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES ONLINE; WE DESIGNED AN ONLINE COURSE TO BE OFFERED AT COMMUNITY COLLEGES ACROSS THE COUNTRY; AND WE OFFER VARIOUS OPPORTUNITIES TO PUT ONE'S NO-BLAME TRAINING TO WORK. WE BELIEVE OUR RESPONSIVE AND IMPACTFUL 'CITIZEN LEADERSHIP SERVICE,' WITH ITS FOCUS ON SOLUTIONS, IS CRITICALLY NEEDED TO BRIDGE OUR DEEP PUBLIC DIVIDE AND PROVIDE A VITAL AND PRACTICAL WAY TO ADDRESS THE ISSUES WE FACE IN THE 21ST CENTURY. WE LOOK FORWARD TO CONTINUING IN THESE ENDEAVORS. |
