| Form 990, Part III, Line 3: Ceased Conducting or Significant Changes To Services | When COVID-19 erupted in March of 2020, the Arboretum was one of a handful of botanic gardens across the country that remained open for visitation during the entire pandemic, serving the community and providing access to the healing power of nature. During the early months of COVID-19, which impacted the fourth quarter of 2019-2020 fiscal year, the Arboretum focused on its core mission as a botanic garden. This included caring for the gardens and plant collections, many of which are generations in the making. This also included doing everything possible to ensure the safety of all visitors. Deemed essential by Los Angeles County, the Arboretum quickly implemented all CDC health and safety guidelines to ensure we continue to provide safe garden experiences to the scores of members and visitors who flocked to the Arboretum. Measures included timed and ticketed entry, contactless payment and entry, mask and distancing requirements, increased cleansing frequency of common areas, and so much more.Quickly, the Arboretum pivoted and re-launched programs to serve the community. In the area of youth education, we developed a free resource called At-Home Nature Adventures. These turn-key educational resources used items easily found at home and offered a variety of themes, encouraging discovery of the natural world and critical thinking. The Arboretum also re-tooled its summer camp program to safely serve youth. Virtual education and lecture series and online resources met local community needs, and these programs continued and expanded through the next fiscal year as COVID-19 continued. As soon as we could begin opening up, we relaunched outdoor wellness classes for the health and wellbeing of the community. |

| STATEMENT OF CURRENT AND ONGOING FINANCIAL SOUNDNESS | IN FISCAL YEAR 2019-20 THE UNEXPECTED HAPPENED WORLDWIDE. AN OUTBREAK OF A RESPIRATORY DISEASE CAUSED BY A NOVEL (NEW) CORONAVIRUS WAS FIRST DETECTED IN CHINA AND SUBSEQUENTLY SPREAD TO OVER 100 INTERNATIONAL LOCATIONS, INCLUDING THE UNITED STATES. ON MARCH 11, 2020, THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION PUBLICLY CHARACTERIZED COVID-19 AS A PANDEMIC AND, SHORTLY THEREAFTER, ON MARCH 16, 2020, THE INDIVIDUAL GOVERNMENTS OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY ANNOUNCED A MANDATORY SHELTER IN PLACE ORDER FOR ALL RESIDENTS IN THE AREA. Deemed essential by Los Angeles County, the Arboretum was one of a handful of botanic gardens across the country that, albeit with some newly enforced restrictions, remained open for visitation during the entire pandemic. Yet, despite these sudden closures, new stipulations, and safety protocols, the Arboretum Foundation's financial health remained strong and did not experience an adverse reaction to Covid-19; in Fiscal Year 19-20, the organization realized a generous surplus in revenue, generated in part by successful capital campaign efforts. During this time, the Arboretum also made the strategic and purposeful decision to the delay use of its Moonlight Forest Festival proceeds, originally earmarked for garden improvement projects, to until after the Covid-19 pandemic was contained. As more and more visitors experience renewed senses of enthusiasm and confidence in the return to a pre-pandemic era, the Arboretum Foundation is looking forward to continuing to serve and act as a pillar in its community this next Fiscal Year 20-21. |
