| FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4A | 2020 WAS A UNIQUE YEAR FOR PDSA DUE TO THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC. BUT THESE DRASTIC CHALLENGES PRESENTED AN OPPORTUNITY FOR PDSA TO REACH SO MANY MORE PATIENTS, CAREGIVERS, HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS AND RESEARCHERS AND IT WAS THE ORGANIZATIONS BUSIEST YEAR BY FAR. SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS AROUND TREATMENT DECISIONS AND ISSUES OF BLEEDING AND CLOTTING BROUGHT ON BY THE COVID-19 VIRUS AND VACCINES HAS GREATLY IMPACTED THE ITP PATIENT AND PHYSICIAN COMMUNITY. RECOGNIZING A NEED FOR GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT, THE PDSA STAFF AND MEDICAL ADVISORS TOOK SWIFT ACTION FROM THE ONSET, OFFERING UPDATED EDUCATIONAL AND SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION ON COVID-19 AND ITP ON OUR WEBSITE, PDSA.ORG, WHICH HAS AVERAGED 100,000 MONTHLY VISITORS OVER THE COURSE OF 2020; THROUGH RESEARCH ARTICLES AND COMMENTARY WRITTEN FOR PDSA'S MONTHLY E-NEWS AND 28-PAGE QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER, THE PLATELET NEWS, AND VIA SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS. PDSA'S 60 LOCAL SUPPORT GROUPS HELD MEETINGS VIRTUALLY AND ADDED A PDSA MEDICAL ADVISOR ON MANY OF THE CALLS TO ANSWER PATIENT/CAREGIVER QUESTIONS, WHICH WERE PRIMARILY FOCUSED ON COVID-19 AND ITP, TREATMENT PREFERENCES, AND VACCINES. IN APRIL 2020, WE ORGANIZED OUR FIRST VIRTUAL TOWN HALL, FACTS OVER FEAR: COVID-19 & ITP WITH US AND GLOBAL ITP EXPERTS, A WORLD- RENOWNED IMMUNOLOGIST AND THE INFECTIOUS DISEASE EXPERT AT THE NIH. THE LIVE EVENT INCLUDED MORE THAN 700 PARTICIPANTS FROM 44 COUNTRIES. WE HELD A 2ND COVID-19 & ITP TOWN HALL AT THE END OF JULY AS PART OF ITP CONFERENCE 2020. WE BUILD OUR OWN VIRTUAL CONFERENCE PLATFORM AND THIS THREE-DAY EVENT HAD MORE THAN 700 PARTICIPANTS FROM MORE THAN 200 COUNTRIES. CONCERN WITHIN THE ITP COMMUNITY CONTINUED TO GROW AS ADDITIONAL REPORTS OF THROMBOCYTOPENIA CASES FOLLOWING COVID-19 VACCINATION MADE THE NEWS. CALLS AND EMAILS TO THE PDSA OFFICE AND TO OUR FB PAGE INCREASED AND WE WERE ANSWERING ON AVERAGE 10 PER DAY VIA OUR ITP HELPLINE. THIS WAS IN ADDITION TO PDSA'S REGULAR PROGRAMS AND RESOURCES, INCLUDING THE ITP POKE-R-CLUB FOR KIDS, COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM, UPDATING AND TRANSLATING NUMEROUS EDUCATIONAL BOOKLETS, ATTENDING AND EXHIBITING AT SCIENTIFIC MEETINGS (VIRTUAL), AUTHORING MULTIPLE SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS, AWARDING TWO 20,000 GRANTS TO INVESTIGATORS CONDUCTING INNOVATIVE ITP RESEARCH, AND OVERSEEING THE WEBSITE GLOBALITP.ORG AND THE INTERNATIONAL ITP ALLIANCE, WHICH HAS GROWN TO 32 PATIENT ASSOCIATIONS FROM 27 COUNTRIES. |
| FORM 990, PAGE 6, PART VI, LINE 11B | PRIOR TO FILING, THE FORM 990 IS PRESENTED TO THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND FINANCE STAFF FOR REVIEW AND APPROVAL. THE FORM 990 IS THEN ELECTRONICALLY DISTRIBUTED TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS IN ADVANCE OF FILING. A BOARD OFFICER SIGNS THE 990 (OR 8879-EO) AND THE 990 IS ELECTRONICALLY FILED. |
| FORM 990, PAGE 6, PART VI, LINE 12C | EACH YEAR, THE BOARD MEMBERS ARE ASKED TO REVIEW THE ORGANIZATION'S CONFLICT OF INTEREST POLICY. AMONG OTHER THINGS, THE POLICY MAKES CLEAR THAT ALL DECISIONS OF THE BOARD, OFFICERS, AND EMPLOYEES OF THE ORGANIZATION ARE MADE SOLELY ON THE BASIS OF A DESIRE TO PROMOTE THE BEST INTEREST OF THE ORGANIZATION AND THE PUBLIC GOOD. THE CONFLICT OF INTEREST STATEMENT REQUESTS BOARD MEMBERS TO IDENTIFY TO THE BEST OF THEIR KNOWLEDGE AFFILIATIONS WITH ORGANIZATIONS THAT MAY BE POTENTIALLY RELATED TO THE FINANCIALS OR OTHER SUBSTANTIVE OPERATIONS OF THE ORGANIZATION. THEY ARE ALSO ASKED TO IDENTIFY CIRCUMSTANCES INVOLVING EITHER THEMSELVES, OR A MEMBER OF THEIR EXTENDED FAMILY, THAT MAY BE CONSTRUED AS A CONFLICT OF INTEREST. AT THE STAFF LEVEL, THE ORGANIZATION'S PERSONNEL ALSO ENSURE THAT THERE ARE NO CONFLICTS OF INTEREST WHEN CONSIDERING THE ENGAGEMENT OF A NEW VENDOR. IF A POTENTIAL CONFLICT IS IDENTIFIED, APPROPRIATE STEPS ARE TAKEN TO BOTH ASSESS THE NATURE OF THE POTENTIAL CONFLICT AND, SUBSEQUENTLY, TO ENSURE THAT THE POSSIBILITY OF AN ACTUAL CONFLICT IS MITIGATED. SUCH MITIGATION IS MANAGED AND THE LETTER AND SPIRIT OF THE CONFLICTS POLICY ARE UPHELD. |
| FORM 990, PAGE 6, PART VI, LINE 15A | THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE ANNUALLY EVALUATES THE PERFORMANCE OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR. COMPENSATION IS BASED ON PERFORMANCE AND COMPARED TO OTHER AREA MISSION-COMPARABLE ORGANIZATIONS OF SIMILAR SIZE. COMPENSATION FOR STAFF WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION IS DETERMINED BY THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR. THE LEVEL OF COMPENSATION IS SET BASED ON PERFORMANCE AND IN RELATION TO OTHER AREA MISSION-COMPARABLE ORGANIZATIONS OF SIMILAR SIZE. THIS COMPENSATION IS A COMPONENT OF THE BUDGET, WHICH IS REVIEWED AND APPROVED BY THE FINANCE COMMITTEE AND ALSO BY THE BOARD AS A WHOLE. |
| FORM 990, PAGE 6, PART VI, LINE 19 | THE ORGANIZATION'S GOVERNING DOCUMENTS, FORM 1023, FORM 990 CONFLICT OF INTEREST POLICY AND FINANCIAL STATEMENTS ARE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC UPON REQUEST. THE FORM 990, WITHOUT SCHEDULE B) CAN ALSO BE FOUND ON SEVERAL PUBLICLY-ACCESSIBLE WEBSITES. |
