THE COMMODITY SUPPLEMENTAL FOOD PROGRAM IS ANOTHER FEDERALLY FUNDED PROGRAM THROUGH THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE THAT WORKS TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF LOW-INCOME ELDERLY PEOPLE AT LEAST 60 YEARS OF AGE BY SUPPLEMENTING THEIR DIETS WITH NUTRITIOUS USDA COMMODITY FOODS. Our nutritionist trains our educators on a curriculum she created which is based off of the building blocks for healthy kids, a curriculum created by Sodexo and campus kitchen. THESE COMMODITIES ARE PURCHASED AT SUB-MARKET PRICES AND ARE INCONSISTENT IN AVAILABILITY. IN FISCAL YEAR 2020, WE PROVIDED OVER 304,000 MEALS. THE SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM (SFSP) IS ALSO COVERED UNDER THE U.S DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AND ADMINISTERED BY THE ODE. THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES FREE, NUTRITIOUS MEALS TO HELP CHILDREN IN LOW-INCOME AREAS GET THE NUTRITION THEY NEED TO LEARN, PLAY AND GROW THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER MONTHS WHEN SCHOOL IS NOT IN SESSION. SFSP IS TARGETED TO LOW-INCOME AREAS WHERE 50 PERCENT OR MORE OF THE STUDENTS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR FREE OR REDUCED-PRICED SCHOOL MEALS. CHILDREN AGES 18 AND YOUNGER MAY RECEIVE FREE MEALS THROUGH THIS PROGRAM.
