Explanation:
The Online Merchants Guild is a small org with an all-volunteer board of directors/executive director. The Guild misunderstood some advice given by legal counsel early on to mean that they were not required to file form 990 until the third year of its existence. Immediately upon becoming aware that this was incorrect information the Guild tasked its newly appointed COO with rectifying the situation as soon as possible. The guild subsequently retained a CPA and intends to file all overdue returns within the next 30 days. In addition, the Board has established a "Tax Compliance Policy" that has instituted policies that will ensure that future annual filings will be processed on time. This process includes: 1. A mandatory board meeting no later than January 15 to review the prior year's financials and start the 990 process. 2. An internal deadline stating that all data necessary for annual filing of the form 990 will be turned over to the Guild's CPA no later than March 1st. 3. Naming of an individual from the organization that is responsible for ensuring that the returns are filed on time and reporting said filing to the board. We respectfully request an abatement of the late fees associated with the late filing of our first two years of tax forms.
