THE CHAPTER PROVIDES SUPPORT THROUGH THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS: ADVOCACY, LEGISLATION, SPORTS AND RECREATION, MEDICAL RESEARCH, EDUCATION, AND COMMUNICATION. WHILE ASSISTING OUR POPULATION IN THIS MANNER AND THEIR FAMILIES LIVING IN THE STATES ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST. THE CHAPTER HELD GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS IN HEPHZIBAH GA, DUBLIN GA, COLUMBIA SC, SALISBURY NC, ASHEVILLE NC, AND JOHNSON CITY TN. THE CHAPTER PROVIDED LUNCH AT EACH MEETING. WE STARTED MEETINGS IN CHARLESTON, SC, AND ATLANTA GA AREAS. THE CHAPTER MOVED THE MEETINGS TO ZOOM AFTER THE PANDEMIC. AT THESE MEETINGS, THE MEMBERS ARE UPDATED AND INFORMED ON ISSUES RELATED TO THEIR HEALTHCARE, BENEFITS, APPOINTMENTS, AND ISSUES. IN THE MEETINGS OVER ZOOM, THE MEMBERS CAN ASK VAMC'S STAFF, PVA NSO'S, AND THE CHAPTER QUESTIONS. THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS WERE MEETING BI-MONTHLY BUT SWITCHED TO MONTHLY ZOOM MEETINGS AFTER THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. SPORTS AND RECREATION PROGRAM IS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF PARALYZED VETERANS AND OTHER PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES BY ASSISTING THE EXPANSION OF BOTH THE QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF OPPORTUNITIES IN SPORTS AND RECREATION, ESPECIALLY THOSE ACTIVITIES WHICH ENHANCE LIFETIME HEALTH AND FITNESS. WE HAD OUR ANNUAL LOCAL BASS TOURNAMENT IN OCT '19. HOWEVER DUE TO COVID-19, THE CHAPTER HAD TO CANCEL EVENTS ALL IN-PERSON EVENTS DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, WE WERE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN NUMEROUS ON-LINE SPORTING ACTIVITIES WITH OUR NATIONAL OFFICE AS WELL OTHER ORGANIZATIONS. OUR CHAPTER CURRENTLY HAS ONLY ONE EMPLOYEE, A FULL-TIME ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT. TO ASSIST WITH THE DAY TO DAY MANAGEMENT OF THE OFFICE, THE CHAPTER UTILIZES ITS VOLUNTEER PERSONNEL; THEY ALSO SERVE OUR MEMBERS AT THE VA HOSPITALS, CARRY OUT MANDATED PROGRAMS, AS WELL AS THE OUTREACH MEETINGS MENTION ABOVE. THE SOUTHERN EDITION (CHAPTER PRINTED NEWSLETTER) AND THE ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTER VIA CONSTANT CONTACT CONTINUES TO PROVIDE TIMELY, VALUABLE, EDUCATIONAL, AND PRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR OUR MEMBERS. THE SOUTHERN EDITION IS PUBLISHED SIX TIMES A YEAR. IT WILL OCCASIONALLY HAVE AN ARTICLE SPOTLIGHTING A MEMBER; HOW PVA HAS INFLUENCE OR WHAT IMPACT PVA HAD ON THEIR LIFE. THE ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTER PROVIDES WEEKLY AND IMPORTANT UPDATES TO OUR MEMBERS IN A TIMELY AND COST-EFFECTIVE MANNER. DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THE CHAPTER PARTNERED WITH BRANDSTORM PROMOTIONS TO SUPPLY OUR ENTIRE MEMBERSHIP WITH A PPE BAG, THIS CONSISTED OF HAND SANITIZER, GAITER MASK, FOLDABLE WATER BOTTLE, AND A STRING BAG, THESE WERE MAILED OUT TO OVER 1700 MEMBERS. THE GOVERNMENT RELATIONS PROGRAM WORKS HARD TO MAKE SURE THROUGH ADVOCACY AND LEGISLATION THAT OUR MEMBERS AND THE DISABLED COMMUNITY ARE CONTINUING TO BE EDUCATED AND INFORMED ON ISSUES AND BARRIERS. NATIONAL DIRECTOR PAUL STEWART, CARL MORGAN, AND BOARD SECRETARY JOE GETHERS ATTENDED THE PVA'S ADVOCACY AND LEGISLATION SEMINAR IN WASHINGTON DC IN MARCH '19. CHAPTER PRESIDENT ALAN WASHINGTON ATTENDED THE SOUTH CAROLINA ASSISTANT TECHNOLOGY EXPO IN COLUMBIA, SC WHICH TYPICALLY HAS OVER 800 ATTENDEES, INCLUDE INDIVIDUALS WITH VARIOUS TYPES OF DISABILITIES, THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS AND CAREGIVERS, TEACHERS, THERAPISTS, COLLEGE STUDENTS, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PERSONNEL, AS WELL AS OTHER PROFESSIONAL INDIVIDUALS, SENIOR CITIZENS, ETC. WE PROVIDED THEM WITH LITERATURE AS WELL AS ONE ON ONE CONVERSATION ABOUT THE MISSION OF SEPVA. WE ESTIMATED OVER 70 INDIVIDUALS ATTENDING OUR BOOTH. JOE WILLIS SET UP A BOOTH FOR NATIONAL PROSTHETIC AWARENESS AT THE CARL VINSON VAMC IN DUBLIN GA. PAUL STEWART AND TWILA ADAMS VOLUNTEERED AT THE SALISBURY VAMC IN NC DURING NATIONAL PROSTHETIC AWARENESS WEEK. STAFF MEMBER, ALICIA BARBER, AND MEMBERS, ALAN WASHINGTON ATTENDED CENSUS TRAINING AND VOLUNTEER RUEVENA BURNETT AND STAFF MEMBER ALICIA BARBER ATTENDED AND GRANT WRITING TRAINING WITH THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FOR THE CSRA AND GCN. SEPVA ATTENDED THE END OF YEAR SPONSORS DINNER WITH RICHLAND COUNTY RECREATION DEPARTMENT COMMISSION, COLUMBIA, SC AS THEY MADE A PRESENTATION FOR ALL OF THEIR ADAPTIVE PROGRAMS THEY PROVIDE FOR THE COUNTY, IT WAS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO INFORM BUSINESSES IN THE RICHLAND COUNTY ABOUT SEPVA'S MISSION. SEPVA PARTNERED WITH SPINAL CORD INJURY MASTERS CHAPTER TO START A LOCAL PEER SUPPORT GROUP IN THE CSRA. MEETINGS WERE HELD MONTHLY, THE FIRST ONE AT THE CHAPTER OFFICE, THE FOLLOWING MEETING WAS HELD IN THE DAY ROOM AT THE CHARLIE NORWOOD VAMC SCI UNIT, TEAM BUILDING EVENTS WERE AT STARS AND STRIKES WHERE THE GROUP DID BOWLING AND THE ESCAPE ROOMS. THE PEER SUPPORT GROUP CONSISTED OF MEMBERS, DISABLED INDIVIDUALS FROM THE COMMUNITY AS WELL AS NATIONAL SERVICE OFFICERS AND SOCIAL WORKERS (VAMC). DURING THE YEAR WE STARTED ATTENDING FIRST FRIDAY MEANS BUSINESS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MEETINGS IN AIKEN, SC, AND DUBLIN, GA, AFTER THE PANDEMIC STARTED WE ATTENDED VIRTUAL MEETINGS WITH THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, COLUMBIA COUNTY IN GA. SEPVA DONATED THEIR DINING HALL FACILITIES TO BARACK TEMPLE FOR THEIR VETERANS DAY LUNCHEON THEIR PROVIDED LUNCH FOR STAFF AND VETERANS AT THE GEORGIA WAR VETERAN HOMES IN THE CSRA AS WELL AS OTHER VETERANS LIVING IN THE COMMUNITY. WE HOSTED OUR 20TH ANNUAL TOY RUN FOR THE FORT GORDON CHRISTMAS HOUSE. OUR ANNUAL AUGUSTA VAMC SCI HOLIDAY LUNCHEON WAS A HUGE SUCCESS WITH BOTH INPATIENTS, OUTPATIENTS, AND STAFF ENJOYING THE EVENT. WE DONATED 62 CASES OF TRAP SHOOT AMMUNITION TO THE GEORGIA-CAROLINA COUNCIL SCOUTS BSA FOR THEIR SUMMER PROGRAMS. WE SPONSORED THE RICHLAND COUNTY RECREATION COMMISSION (RCRC) SC WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL TEAM WHICH INCLUDED BOTH MEN AND WOMEN MEMBERS FROM THE CHAPTER AS WELL AS DISABLED INDIVIDUALS FROM SC TO BRING AWARENESS TO THE COMMUNITY ON SERVICES THAT THE SEPVA PROVIDES FOR DISABLED INDIVIDUALS. THE SEPVA SPONSORED THE DUBLIN HAVOC TRAVEL BASEBALL TEAM WHICH IS MADE UP OF SEPVA MEMBERS AND VETERANS KIDS, WITH 1000.00. THEY HELP BRING AWARENESS TO CENTRAL GEORGIA SERVICES THAT THE CHAPTER OFFER TO DISABLE VETERANS AS WELL AS DISABLE INDIVIDUALS. |
