Part V, Line 4: Endowment funds held by the Organization are invested to provide a stable, long-term funding source to supplement strategic funding needs. These include support for our child sponsorship program, children in crisis, Christian commitments, and other priority projects not fully funded from annual giving. Part V, Lines 2a-2c: In accordance with the principles of FASB ASU 2016-14 (ASC 958), the organization has implemented required changes to its audited financial statements for the period ended 9/30/2020. Thus, we have reported the revised net asset categories from the audited financial statements as follows on Form 990, Schedule D, Part V, Lines 2a-2c: Line 2a - Without donor restrictions Lines 2b and 2c - With donor restrictions
Part X, Line 2: The Organization follows the guidance of Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) 740, Accounting for Income Taxes, related to uncertainties in income taxes, which prescribes a threshold of more likely than not for recognition and derecognition of tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. There are no such uncertain tax positions for the Organization for the year ended September 30, 2020.
Part XI and Part XII The Organization was included in consolidated, independent audited financial statements for the tax year for which it is completing this return. Therefore, the Organization is not required to complete Schedule D, Part XI Reconciliation of Revenue per Audited Financial Statements With Revenue per Return nor Schedule D, Part XII Reconciliation of Expense per Audited Financial Statements With Expense per Return. In order to improve readability of Form 990 and allow for easy comparability to the Organization's audited financial statements, the Organization is voluntarily including the reconciliations below. Supplemental Information. Provide the explanations required by Part I, line 2b, columns (iii) and (v); and Part III, lines 9, 9b, 10b, 15b, 15c, 16, and 17b, as applicable. Also provide any additional information. See instructions.
Return Reference Explanation
Part I, Line 2b, Column (iii) Thriving Children Advocates is authorized to collect funds and required to remit them immediately to World Vision at the end of the fundraising event.
Part I, Line 2b, Column (iv) In regards to fundraising consultants: Due to the nature of the consultants' assistance to World Vision, no revenue is specifically attributable to them. They assist World Vision in many aspects of our fundraising efforts throughout the organization. Some of the work is related to the current year fundraising efforts and others are related to the securing the future of the organization. Additionally some of the costs paid to Blue North Strategies, The Hacker Group, One and All, and Stelter Company are not related to fundraising activities, rather they are fees for routine services. Therefore, they are not included in the amounts paid listed on Part I of Schedule G. For FY20, the costs include printing of $2,449,407, postage of $87,198, and freight of $98.

Form 990, Part I, Line 1 The Organization provides emergency relief and long term community development programs around the world in nearly 100 countries. The Organization also educates the public on poverty and justice related issues and advocates on behalf of the impoverished and oppressed. World Vision serves all people, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, or gender. The Organization strives to maximize its impact by partnering with other development groups, local organizations, churches, and governments. During the year, World Vision reached over 51 million people through health, water/sanitation, child protection, and other life-saving initiatives with the support of public and private donors. Specifically reaching 3.4 million people with sustainable sources of clean water, 1.8 million people with water during emergency situations and 2.7 million people with improved sanitation.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 1 The Organization has an Executive Committee with authority to act on behalf of the governing body. The Committee includes the board chair, vice chair, and standing committee chairs. The Committee is chaired by the board chair. It may act on behalf of the board between meetings. In addition to responsibilities and limitations on its authority outlined in the bylaws, the Committee may not change the bylaws nor appoint/terminate or accept a resignation from the president. The Committee serves the board by overseeing relationships with other organizations (including any subsidiary or supporting corporations), public affairs, and the board's annual evaluation of the President and his or her compensation.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11b Form 990 is prepared by an independent CPA firm. It is provided to the entire Board of Directors after it is reviewed by management. The Board of Directors reviews Form 990 and raises any questions to management for resolution. Form 990 is then filed electronically with the IRS and posted to World Vision's web site.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12c World Vision has a written Conflict of Interest Policy. Annually all employees complete a disclosure form identifying transactions and relationships which may be a conflict of interest. Management reviews all disclosed potential conflicts and determines whether any conflict exists. Any conflicts are raised for review to a committee which includes the CFO, Internal Audit and Legal. Whatever action deemed necessary by this committee is taken, sometimes in consultation with the President. Legal provides a summary report to the Board of Directors via the Audit and Finance Committee. There is a similar process for the Board of Directors to submit a conflict of interest disclosure form annually. The Board of Directors disclosures are reviewed by management. Any issues are taken to the Board of Directors for resolution, excluding the Board member for whom the potential conflict exists.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15 The Board of Directors mandates the compensation philosophy for the entire organization. The President's salary is reviewed on an annual basis. The Board's Executive Committee will formally evaluate the president based on performance and organizational goals after seeking documented input from each member of the Board, as well as the Senior Leadership team. The Board also determines any compensation adjustments and documents that approval process. In addition, for the purposes of a compensation review, the Board's Executive Committee periodically contracts with compensation consulting firms to conduct an independent review of executive compensation. Once the data is gathered and analyzed by the committee, the recommended compensation package for the President is presented to the full Board for approval. The process for determining the compensation grade levels for the senior leadership team of World Vision is managed by the Compensation Manager and contemporaneously documented. All officers and key employees are evaluated and matched to market data of both for-profit and nonprofit organizations where similar positions exist. The President approves the specific salary of the CFO, the Senior Vice President of Human Resources, and other leadership positions who report directly to the President within the appropriate grade level and within World Vision salary administration guidelines based upon recommendation of the Compensation Manager. In addition, periodic audits and reviews are conducted utilizing an outside consultant to validate that compensation levels of the senior leadership team are consistent with our compensation philosophy and current market data.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19 World Vision posts the audited financial statements on its website. If the requestor does not have access to the internet the organization will mail a copy. The governing documents and the conflict of interest policy are available upon request.
Form 990 Part VII and Schedule J, Part II: Directors, officers, key employees, highest compensated employees, and former such persons are listed in descending order of reporting per the instructions without regard to level of compensation.
Form 990, Part XI, line 9: Pension Actuarial Gain 1,460,821. Schedule K-1 Unrelated Business Income 22,549.
