| Form 990, Part III, Line 2 New program services | Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the Rye Y was closed for several months but was able to offer a number of virtual program classes and activities for our members and the community including group exercise, arts and crafts, family activities, water safety tips, pre-school cooking , chronic disease programming and youth sports. Once we reopened and the school year began, we offered full day child care to assist families with their children's remote learning needs based on the hybrid school schedules most of the school districts in our area were operating under. |
| Form 990, Part III, Line 3 Significant changes in program services | Due to the COVID 19 pandemic the Rye Y was closed for several months and was forced to offer much of our programming virtually. Once we were able to re-open, we had to modify many of our programs and were not able to run some of them due to the safety restrictions issued by New York State related to the pandemic. |
| Form 990, Part III, Line 4d Description of other program services | (Expenses $ including grants of $) Social Responsibility: For 107 years, the Rye Y has been a hub of community life and a catalyst for positive change. When the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to close in mid-March 2020, the Rye Y quickly adapted to the new reality, showing resilience and resourcefulness in the face of unprecedented challenges. We helped our members stay active and engaged through on-demand, Zoom, and outdoor group exercise classes. We collected food for the hungry and donated t-shirts for masks. We ran a summer child care program, and expanded our school-year child care to meet the needs of working parents as they navigated ever-changing school schedules We did all this and more while keeping a powerful promise: no-one will be turned away from a Y program or activity because he or she can't pay. From the partnerships that foster strong communities to the small group programs that promote health and well-being, the spirit of social responsibility infuses every aspect of our work. In 2020, we demonstrated our commitment to social responsibility through the following: * Our Y Cares Financial Assistance program helps keep the Y accessible to all. In 2020, we awarded $64,060 in program and membership subsidies to 72 families and individuals who needed a helping hand, even with our facility closed for nearly four months due to the pandemic. * Between early January and mid-March, the Rye Y continued to provide free pool time, lifeguards and meeting space to the Rye Association for the Handicapped two days per week. Our partnership with this community organization has spanned over 50 years! * During the early weeks of the pandemic, the Rye Y's membership team reached out to our members, especially seniors, to make sure they were well and managing the newly imposed isolation and stress. * In April, we launched our Rye Y at Home YouTube Channel, which featured adult exercise and family and children's activities. By the end of the year, it had received 7602 views. * The Rye Y donated five boxes of unused t-shirts to Hope Community Services in New Rochelle to be turned into masks for their clients, staff and volunteers. * In May, the Rye Y created a virtual fitness internship for Rye High School seniors. The students participated in HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) via Zoom with one of our instructors. * The goal of the Rye Y's Togetherhood initiative is to engage volunteers in service projects that help local nonprofits and build community. Although the "together" part of the program was thwarted in 2020, Y members still found ways to serve. During May and June, seven volunteers knitted and crocheted 88 infant caps and three baby blankets for clients of Open Door Family Medical Centers. The knitting and crocheting team grew in July when 16 volunteers began creating baby blankets for economically vulnerable families served by The Sharing Shelf in Port Chester. In late July, we held a Togetherhood "Drive-By Food Drive" for Bread of Life pantry. Community and Y members delivered their non-perishable food items to the Y's parking lot, where two high school students lifted the donations from trunks and back seats. Families from the Y's Summer Childcare program also donated several bags of food during drop-off and pick-up times. In October, we placed a large permanent bin in our entryway, making it easier for our members to donate food to Bread of Life any time they come to the Y. * In August, there was dancing in the street when the Rye Y held four free Zumba classes for the community on Purchase Street in Rye, in partnership with the Rye Chamber of Commerce. * The Rye Y continued to be actively involved in RyeACT (Rye Action for Children and Teens), a grassroots coalition that is mobilizing our community to prevent teen substance use and support healthy choices. As the coalition's fiscal agent, our staff handles financial matters related to RyeACT's federal Drug-Free Communities grant. * Safety Around Water is a free Rye Y drowning prevention initiative that gives young children the skills and confidence to stay safe around water. While we weren't able to hold classes at local schools or in person at the Y, as we have in the past, our aquatics staff produced safety videos for families to view at home. * In November, the Rye Y partnered with WestMed Medical Group for a virtual discussion on "Mental Health for Cancer Survivors and their Families During the COVID-19 Pandemic". The event, which was free and open to the public, included a demonstration of LIVESTRONG at the YMCA exercises. * As part of our Safe Routes to School initiative, the Rye Y sponsored the 10th Annual Heads Up! Distracted Driving and Walking Poster Contest for Rye High School students. The contest engaged students in raising awareness about the dangers of distracted driving and walking. Fifty-eight students participated in the 2020-2021 contest, which was judged-via Zoom--by eight community leaders, including the Rye City Mayor and the Rye City Schools superintendent. * The Rye Y wrapped up the year with a holiday Giving Tree. We were heartened by the generosity of our members who donated 150 gifts for the children served by Port Chester's Carver Center. |
