Instruction: Teachers College brings together a breadth of academic disciplines unmatched by any other graduate school of education within a single institution. Our name notwithstanding, the College, from its inception has focused not only on pre-K-12 classroom education, but also on adult learning, leadership, health, psychology, nutrition, movement sciences, art and music education, speech pathology, and many more areas in human development. This vision of education (today embodied in 79 academic programs across 10 academic departments) supports learning that broadly enables the development not only of individual students, but of families, communities, cities and nations. Teachers College's 170 full-time tenure-track faculty includes some of the most nationally and internationally prominent and widely respected thinkers, researchers and practitioners in their various fields. Policy research is a major strength, with a core group of faculty members who have directly influenced national legislation or state legislation in early childhood education, community colleges, school integration, social services, school finance, national learning standards, charter school development and funding of national health programs. The College's Cowin Conference Center has helped establish the College as a national center for debates on these and other issues. The College served as host to a live and nationally webcast debate between the education advisers of the two former presidential nominees, as well as host of major addresses by the US Secretary of Education and two New York City public school Chancellors. TC faculty are also widely known for innovative curriculum development in academic subjects; health education focused on schools; nutrition education; organizational psychology; developmental psychology; and more.
4b (Code:   ) (Expenses $ 46,883,583 including grants of $ 1,206,704 ) (Revenue $ 17,911,159 )
Research, Training and Public Service: TC's current annual funded research expenditures are in excess of $46 million, with major funding provided by the US National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, the Heising-Simons Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Ascendium Education Solutions Inc., and other public and non-profit institutions. TC places a major emphasis on public and community service, both in its research and in preparation of its students. The College's Office of School and Community Partnerships has collaborated with a group of Harlem public schools to form a unique partnership supported by the JPMorgan Chase Foundation, focused on professional and curriculum development in the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and math). Through this partnership, which is now anchored by the Teachers College Community School (established in partnership with the New York City Department of Education) as well as through TC's pre-service teacher education programs, which require two field placements per year in city schools, and the TC Zankel Fellowships and other programs, TC students spend significant time in public service roles.

Established in 1904 as the Bureau of Publications, the Press is one of the oldest and most distinguished publishers of educational materials in the United States. Since 1965, when the Bureau of Publications became Teachers College Press, its primary purpose has been to publish works that respond to, examine, and confront issues and change pertaining to education and the educational process. Over the years the publication program has included scholarly and professional works in all areas of education- from early childhood and curriculum to philosophy and critical theory; from assessment and school reform to parenting and social issues. It now publishes more than 55 titles a year with over 1,000 titles in print. Among the Press's authors are many of the most distinguished educators from throughout the world, including members of the Teachers College faculty.

Return Reference Explanation
Other Under SFAS 116, the College has elected not to report in its revenue statement and balance sheet works of art, historical treasures, or other similar assets. Collections at the College include works of art, literary works, historical treasures, and artifacts that are maintained in the College's library and buildings. These collections are protected and preserved for public exhibition, education, research, and the furtherance of public service and, therefore, are not recognized as assets on the balance sheets. Costs associated with purchasing additions to and maintaining these collections are recorded as operating expenses in the period in which the items are acquired.
Pt III, Line 4 The Gottesman Libraries at Teachers College contains the world's largest and richest collection of materials on educational professions. The contemporary collections are continuously enhanced by an active acquisition program jointly planned by departmental librarians, faculty, and students. Traditional print & non-print publications are supplemented by a growing number of visual and electronic formats. Many of the historical and archival collections are unavailable elsewhere and represent in balance, breadth, and depth an archive of American intellectual and social history. Elements of these collections are being made more accessible through ongoing digitization projects. Overall, the collections include about 500,000 printed volumes together with substantial non-print collections. In addition to the contemporary collections, the Gottesman Libraries maintain four major historical collections of books, manuscripts, and archival materials. These collections focusing on the history of the College, educational research and scholarship, curriculum materials, and children's fiction allow the Libraries to marshal efforts to develop resources of national and international significance. The library collections support the work of faculty and students in all programs of the College. In addition, these collections are accessible to scholars in the relevant fields from across the country and throughout the world. The materials in the library collections are essential for the efforts of the College to prepare the current generation of educators and educational researchers for their work, which will improve the practice of education and the conduct of educational research. The permanent art collections consists of a variety of almost 2,500 artworks that have been collected over time. The works are mainly on paper, board, canvas and photographic, but also include a significantly smaller number of sculptural pieces and video art. Many of the pieces are on display in different parts of the College including departmental and program offices and common areas such as hallways and community lounges. The remainder are housed in storage at the Macy Art Gallery in the Art & Art Education Program and in the Gottesman Libraries' Historical Art Collections. The permanent collection serves multiple purposes, all of which are geared towards learning and providing opportunities for formal and informal education and socio-cultural inquiry through the study and exhibition of the Collection. The Collection serves as a cultural and historical record of the discipline of Education, the history of the College, NYC and the US, as well as of international contexts, since the College's establishment in the late 19th century. The Collection also provides an opportunity and potential for community and cross-disciplinary community development through curatorial and cultural events such as exhibitions, conferences and lectures surrounding the Collections, that may be coordinated through various academic programs. One of the most valued purposes of the collection is that it serves as a unique resource for student and faculty research.
Pt V, Line 4 The purpose of the Endowment is to support the College and its mission for the benefit of current and future generations. The Endowment funds provide funding for financial aid and various other programs.
Pt X, Line 2 The College is qualified as a not for profit organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, as amended. Accordingly, it is not subject to income taxes except to the extent it has taxable income from activities that are not related to its exempt purpose. The College recognizes the effect of income tax positions only if those positions are more likely than not of being sustained. No provision for income taxes was required for fiscal years 2020 or 2019.
Pt XI, Line 2d Other represents: 1)Scholarship Expenses for FY20, $28,278,670, 2)an increase in other pension and postretirement changes and net periodic benefit costs other than service costs,$2,373,913 3)an increase in the change in value of split interest agreements across all net asset classes, $167,493 and 4)Other Income, $7,726.
Pt XI, Line 4b Other represents 1) Costs of goods sold expenses, $789,230.
Pt XII, Line 4b Other represents Scholarship Expenses
Pt XII, Line 2d Other represents cost of goods sold expenses for the College's publishing arm.

Return Reference Explanation
Pt I Line 2 Tuition Assistance: The Financial Aid Office reviews student eligibility based on the criteria set by the US Department of Education on federal student aid programs. Students are not awarded federal student aid if the criteria for receiving such aid is not met. Any conflicts that arise must be resolved prior to the awarding of funds. Scholarships issued by the College are awarded based on the criterion set by the donor. Each week the Registrar's Office notifies the Financial Aid Office of any student(s) who have withdrawn from classes. A review is done to determine if the student is still eligible for both federal aid and scholarships. Designated staff must review the student's file and contact the student to discuss options for regaining student aid eligibility. Until the issue is resolved the student is no longer eligible for federal aid or College scholarships (if applicable). The aid will be removed until eligibility has been reestablished. Research Assistance: The College monitors the study payments to participants using a third party portal which reports information on the supplemental income paid in real time. Funding for the payments are transferred to the 3rd party's account and used to make automatic and monthly payments to study participants, as directed by the College. The College reviews the account balance and distribution of payments on at least a monthly basis to ensure the correct amounts are distributed and that our account balance is sufficient to meet additional payment needs.
Pt III, col (b) The estimate included in Part III, Col (b) represents 1)unduplicated student count as obtained from the Financial Aid Office for all students who received a scholarship during the fiscal year semesters. If the student received in all semesters, they are only counted here one time. 2)represents the number of participants in the first clinical trial of poverty reduction in the U.S.

Pt VI, Line 11b Along with management, the Audit Committee of the Trustees of the College is responsible for reviewing the full Form 990 in detail. The final copy of the Form 990 is provided to the Full Board prior to filing.
Pt VI, Line 12c The College has two conflict of interest policies; Policy A covers trustees, officers, key employees and the next five highest compensated employees and Policy B covers faculty, instructional and professional employees. Some individuals must complete both disclosures. Under both policies, conflict of interest forms must be completed on an annual basis. Policy A - the disclosures are provided to the General Counsel on an annual basis. The forms are reviewed and a report is compiled on the disclosures and reported to the Audit Committee. These individuals must notify the Chair of the Audit Committee when they first become aware of an actual or potential conflict of interest relating to themselves, a family member, or certain affiliated entities. If an actual or potential conflict exists, these individuals must recuse themselves from consideration of any matter as to which there may be a conflict, subject to the right of the Board or Committee to seek information from the individual. The Audit Committee is responsible for the review and evaluation of all potential and actual conflicts and must determine how to manage the potential conflicts. The Audit Committee determines whether it is permissible to proceed with any proposed transaction with an interested person after evaluating whether it is fair and reasonable to the College and whether the conflicted individual would, as a result of the transaction, receive an excessive benefit. If it appears that an interested person has failed to disclose an actual or potential conflict, the Audit Committee is charged with investigating. If it is determined that a conflict exists, the Board may take appropriate disciplinary and corrective action including rescission of the transaction. Policy B - the Human Resource Office monitors the submissions of disclosure forms by faculty and staff. Any potential or actual conflict is reported to the appropriate officer for evaluation.
Pt VI, Line 15a see explanation for Part VI, Line 15b
Pt VI, Line 15b The compensation of officers and key employees is reviewed and approved by the Board of Trustees Committee on Compensation, which also reviews annually established goals and performance. The Committee consists of 7 independent trustees. The President of the College serves as an ex officio member of the Committee, but does not participate when the Committee (or any other Board body) addresses matters relating to his/her compensation. The Committee meets at least annually, and more frequently when needed, and uses a compensation comparison of colleges and universities in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region as well as a smaller set of prestigious colleges and universities. The Committee periodically retains an outside compensation consultant to analyze the compensation of the College's officers and key employees based on comparatibility data. The last full salary study was completed in fiscal year 2019. The Committee (and the Board) keep contemporaneous minutes of the committee meetings and decisions made.
Pt VI, Line 19 The financial statements are available on the College's website. The conflict of interest policy for trustees, officers, key employees is available on the College's intranet and upon request. The conflict of interest policy for faculty and professional staff is available on the College's intranet and upon request. The College's bylaws and charter are available upon request.
Pt VII, Col (E) no hours or compensation are reported in Part VII, Col E for a related organization.
