IN A TYPICAL SEASON, SERVING NEARLY 200,000 ATTENDEES ANNUALLY THROUGH CONCERTS AS WELL AS EXTENSIVE EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY ACCESS INITIATIVES, THE SYMPHONY'S PROGRAMMING APPEALS TO INCREASINGLY DIVERSE AUDIENCES. IN EARLY 2020, MIDWAY THROUGH A SUCCESSFUL 90TH SEASON CELEBRATION, TICKET SALES AND DONATED REVENUE WERE STRONG. FORECASTED PROJECTIONS PREDICTED A POSITIVE FINANCIAL RESULT FOR THE 2019-2020 FISCAL YEAR. HOWEVER, DUE TO THE COVID19 PANDEMIC, THE GRAND RAPIDS SYMPHONY SUSPENDED CONCERT OPERATIONS IN MID-MARCH 2020, WHILE ALSO IMMEDIATELY CONVERTING THE ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF TO A REMOTE WORKING ARRANGEMENT. LATER IN THE SPRING, THE SYMPHONY CANCELLED ITS 2020 PICNIC POPS SUMMER SEASON AT CANNONSBURG SKI AREA. GRS LEADERSHIP INTENTIONALLY CHOSE TO FIND NEW WAYS TO INNOVATIVELY DELIVER GREAT MUSIC TO THE WESTERN MICHIGAN COMMUNITY IN THE SPRING AND SUMMER OF 2020, EVEN AS MANY ORCHESTRAS MADE REACTIVE DECISIONS TO SHUT DOWN OPERATIONS AND FURLOUGH MUSICIANS AND ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF INDEFINITELY. VIRTUAL MUSICAL PRODUCTIONS REPLACED LIVE PERFORMANCES WITHIN 10 DAYS OF THE ONSET OF THE PANDEMIC. MUSICAL MOMENTS WERE POSTED DAILY ON SOCIAL MEDIA; GRS MUSICIANS HAVE SHARED MUSIC THAT INSPIRES, ENTERTAINS, AND EDUCATES. ADDITIONALLY, PRODUCTIONS FOR MOTHER'S DAY, THE 4TH OF JULY AND GRAND RAPIDS VIRTUAL ARTS FESTIVAL OFFERED INSPIRATION, HOPE AND HEALING FOR PATRONS AND THE WIDER COMMUNITY FURTHERING ITS PATH OF INNOVATION, THE GRAND RAPIDS SYMPHONY REVISED ITS 2020 SUMMER SEASON IN AUGUST WITH A NEW LOOK TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD CONCERT SERIES.
