| Other program services Part III line 31 | Part III - Program Service Accomplishments31 - New Parent Resources: Available in English and Spanish to all parents who contact us and who have received a pre-natal or post-natal diagnosis of Down syndrome. The packet is valued at approximately $100 and is provided to new parents free of charge. Expenses - $3,990 Part III - Program Service Accomplishments32 - Step UP for Down Syndrome Fundraiser and Celebration: DSNMC holds an annual Awareness Walk in October during Down Syndrome Awareness Month. This event raises awareness,promotes inclusion, and celebrates the abilities and accomplishments of people with Down syndrome living in Montgomery County, MD, and the surrounding communities. In a typical year, more than 700 people attend the walk. Individuals and corporations donate to this fundraising event. Money raised is used for the general administration and for various projects and programs that carry out the organizations mission. Event expenses incurred are for equipment and facility rentals, food, T-shirts, DJ, promotional and advertising materials. | Part III response or note to any other line in Part III | Part III - Organizations Primary Exempt Purpose DSNMCs primary purpose and mission is to empower and support individuals with Down syndrome, their families and the community through education, information, public awareness, and advocacy. DSNMC supports 400+ families in Montgomery County and the Washington, DC Metro area. DSNMC has been consistently successful in achieving its mission, with many initiatives undertaken throughout 2020. In 2020, DSNMC: provided outreach to over 200 families. hosted over 175 hours of in-person and virtual programming. developed a mini-grant program to support 20 families in need. secured grant funding to grow the Positively Speaking Workshops to include middle and high school students and to offer a series of parent workshops on topics related to Down syndrome. hosted a Winter Dance for over 300 of our members and their families. hosted a successful Step Up for Down Syndrome Celebration that brought togethermore than 400 walkers through virtual ceremonies and car parade. gave away 30 skill-building kits donated by MoCo Movement Center. distributed over 100 hand-sewn face mask and ear-savers. Part III - Program Service Accomplishments28 - Additional Programs & Services include social and educational events for people with Down syndrome of all ages, their parents, and families. These are the Winter Dance, Spring Picnic, Summer Pool Party, Playdates, New Family Breakfasts, and Parent/guardian Workshops. Part III - Program Service Accomplishments29 - Middle School Social Club: This program is designed in partnership with ArtStream to teach, support and empower middle school students with Down syndrome. Through a wide variety of theater-based teaching modules, participants are engaged in activities to increase self-esteem, social competence, and communication skills. Part III - Program Service Accomplishments30 - Virtual Programming: As a result of COVID-19, we have added several new virtual meetings and activities for parents/guardians and individuals with Down syndrome. 1. Group Latino-This group meets biweekly to discuss the distance learning rollout for Montgomery County Public Schools. We provide special education updates and information regarding Individual Education Programs (IEP) as they relate to the new online curriculum. An overview of the new platform is also shared so that parents may help their children navigate this new way of learning. 2. Education Discussion Group-This group is similar to Grupo Latino, but it is held for English-speaking people. Part III - Program Service Accomplishments30 - Virtual Programming: (continued) 3. Moms/Dads Night In-This program meets bimonthly (alternating weeks for moms and dads)and provides an important social networking opportunity for parents/caregivers of children with Down Syndrome. 4. Self-advocate Social Hour-This group meets weekly and is hosted by Scott Gerson, DSNMC Board Member. This social hour provides self-advocates with the opportunity to stay connected, practice communication skills, and have fun while in quarantine. 5. Middle School Hangout-Hosted by self-advocate, Adrian Forsythe, this group meets weekly to stay connected. Adrian engages the middle schoolers in fun activities that build confidence and communication skills. Part III - Program Service AccomplishmentsOther Program & Services: (1/4)Advocacy: Through education, we provide information and resources to parents/caregivers to help families navigate the county school system and beyond. We also disseminate action alerts on key legislation affecting individuals with Down syndrome. Award Winning Annual Educational Conference: Techniques for Success (TFS), which brings in national speakers and self-advocates to teach educators practical tips and strategies for educating students with Down syndrome and those with other special needs. Educators and parents can attend for only a nominal fee and receive continuing education credit and a wealth of resources that they bring back to their schools. Part III - Program Service AccomplishmentsOther Program & Services: (2/4)Award Winning Communication Workshops: DSNMC collaborates with ArtStream, an organization that creates artistic and communication opportunities for people with disabilities. Through this partnership, we provide a series of free workshops for self advocates to help build confidence and learn how to present themselves in public and social situations. DSNMC e-newsletter: An e-newsletter is published monthly to keep members and the community informed about our sponsors, programs, information about DSNMC events and topics of interest. Part III - Program Service AccomplishmentsOther Program & Services: (3/4)Networking Opportunities: These opportunities give parents the chance to ask each other questions, share resources and offer support to each other. Social Events: We host many events throughout the year for our families including an annual membership meeting, winter dance, spring egg hunt, summer picnic, and a summer pool party. DSNMC has a Grupo Latino which meets monthly in addition to attending regular events. We present new families with a welcome kit and link them with other families. DSNMC fosters advocacy by providing members with action alerts related to people living with Down syndrome. |
