FORM 990, PART I, LINE 1, DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION MISSION: INDIVIDUALS, THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY AND ORGANIZATIONS TO HELP LOCAL PEOPLE IN NEED MEASURABLY IMPROVE THEIR LIVES, CREATING LONG-LASTING CHANGE FOR THE BETTERMENT OF OUR COMMUNITY.
FORM 990, PART III, LINE 1 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION: The United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania, serving Allegheny, Butler, Westmoreland, Fayette and Armstrong counties, leads and mobilizes the caring power of individuals, the business community and organizations to help local people in need improve their lives. United Way helps hundreds of thousands of local people each year by addressing hunger and homelessness, financial instability, education, basic needs and employment.
FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A - PROGRAM SERVICES: COMMUNITY INITIATIVES/PARTNERSHIPS: FINANCIALLY STRUGGLING FAMILIES: In fiscal year ending June 30, 2020, allocations totaling approximately $10.1 million were provided to support agencies and initiatives related to the Financially Struggling Families area. These investments provide support for strategies that connect persons in need with resources to increase their self-sufficiency, prevent housing-induced crises and homelessness, and assist in securing or maintaining employment. In addition, one community initiative that received support provided recruitment and training assistance for volunteers to help 8,139 low-income working families complete their income tax forms and apply for tax benefits for which they are eligible, bringing over $12.4 million back into their familys budget and into the community. Another initiative focusing of providing support services for women during critical times of transition. In the past year, nearly 3,173 women in need have benefitted from assistance through this initiative.
FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4B - PROGRAM SERVICES: COMMUNITY INITIATIVES/PARTNERSHIPS: UNITED FOR CHILDREN: In fiscal year ending June, 30, 2020, allocations totaling approximately $5.0 million were made related to the Children and Youth area through agency programs and community initiatives. These investments were made to help children and youth succeed in school by supporting four strategies (early childhood, afterschool, mentoring and tutoring, and school-to-work). Early childhood efforts resulted in preserving high quality early childhood options for children in low income communities and by helping them prepare to enter Kindergarten. On-time kindergarten registration was raised to 90% of children. Afterschool is being supported through allocations to a number of United Way agencies providing afterschool tutoring and through staffing for a coalition dedicated to helping create a system supporting quality afterschool. The Afterschool coalition also provides training to agencies to support quality afterschool practices and helped to improve the quality of programs supporting nearly 57,467 youth this past year. Mentoring is being addressed as United Way serves as initiator and lead partner in the largest call for volunteer mentors in the region's history. Since the program began, 3,357 students have been matched with a mentor.
FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4C - PROGRAM SERVICES: COMMUNITY SERVICES: UNITED FOR SENIORS: In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2020, allocations totaling approximately $2.9 million were made related to the Seniors area to support agency programs and community initiatives. Caregiving supports and alternatives to institutionalization were addressed by providing volunteers to help older adults with a variety of tasks that help them stay in their homes and reduce caregiver burden, such as friendly visits, grocery shopping, and even shoveling snow. Over the past year, the program has recruited 1,406 volunteers who have provided over 48,251 hours of service to 8,108 seniors. Support for collaborations of agencies resulted in enhanced and coordinated services for a greater number of seniors so they could remain safely in their homes.
FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4D - PROGRAM SERVICES: COMMUNITY SERVICES: Other Program Support: In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2020, United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania also allocated funds to the Empowering People with Disabilities area to support agency programs and community initiatives. Housing, Employment, Complex needs and Caregiving supports were addressed by engaging community, corporate and civic partners to help people with disabilities to live more independently. Over the past year, the program provided direct employment support to 560 people with disabilities. In addition, 331 individuals received assistance in their housing search, and more than 4,231 caregivers received support services. In addition, United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania invests in community support and volunteerism. These investments include support for strategic community partnerships and projects, disaster relief efforts, technical assistance to nonprofits and volunteer initiatives focused on engaging the community to make a positive difference.
