Briefly describe the organization’s mission: Kent American Legion Post 15 is a veterans service organization which has been in continuous operation since 1919. The Honor Guard renders military honors including rifle salute to deceased veterans at Tahoma National and other cemeteries. Promotes social and recreational activities for members and their families. Performs respectful destruction of worn out American flags. Marches in parades. Has a motorcycle riders chapter. Assists veterans to obtain VA benefits to which they are entitled or elibible.

Donald Whittington is the post commander and also manages the bar. He is an unpaid volunteer. For gambling, he purchases the punch tabs from a nearby (Auburn) local business. Prepares tax reporting, remits taxes, and maintains the requisite licenses. He retains the spent tabs and destroys them as prescribed by regulation.

Explanation

Schedule L, Part IV

In 2011 a former employee (bartender) brought suit against Kent American Legion Post 15 alleging non-payment of overtime as required by the Fair Labor Standards Act. The court found on behalf of the former employee and awarded 2,500 dollars in overtime pay but also assigned all legal costs in the amount of 162000 dollars to the defendant. Former commander (now members) Abraham Goo provided a cash loan in the form of a promissory note at four percent interest which is being repaid at a thousand dollars per month. The repayment schedule is current.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 6	Veterans of US military service may apply for membership in the American Legion. The cost of membership is $60 per year. The applicant must submit proof of service in the form of DD Form 214. Each member is entitled to vote on matters brought before the monthly meeting. There are no shareholders.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7a	The leadership of the American Legion consists of Commander, two vice commanders, adjutant, fiance officer, service officer, historian, Sergeant at Arms, Color Bearers and Chaplain. These people are selected based upon nominations and voting by the members. The commander and other officers of the Post are voted upon by members of the post.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11b	The Form 990 is discussed at the monthly meeting prior to submission. The monthly meeting is the third Tuesday of each month. Members present are invited to peruse the document. Furthermore, any Form 990 topics worthy of further discussion will be fully disclosed by the finance officer to the other officers and members present.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19	An American Legion post operates in accordance with the rules, regulations, and bylaws of national and state organizations with the post bylaws as an adjunct. Post meetings and records are open to anybody with an interest or questions. Financial statements consisting of check register and income statement are reviewed at each monthly meeting. Cash basis accounting is utilized. A balance sheet is prepared quarterly.
