| Form 990, Part III, Line 2: New Services | Particularly in response to the COVID crisis, Friends of Lachat discontinued some services for this year, and introduced some new services to respond to an acute need by the community for programs that families could safely attend outside their homes. The Lachat Town Farm, due to its size and topography, provided a unique space to meet these community needs.The traditional youth summer program, Little Farmhands, and the indoor Fireside Concert series had to be canceled due to the COVID crisis but are expected to resume again, hopefully in the summer of 2021 for the youth summer program.A new project was initiated to replace the existing garage and build an agricultural center and gathering space to enable programs to be offered year round. The phase 1 architectural and engineering study for this project was largely completed in 2020.A new addition to the Community Garden was completed the Giving Garden. The Giving Garden is a 32 feet by 95 feet production garden where all the produce grown is donated to local social services for people in need. The Giving Garden was built, planted and maintained through the efforts of over 50 volunteers.To provide an opportunity to celebrate Halloween and the Winter holidays, new holiday events were organized. The Lachat Town Farm was transformed into a Haunted Farm through the efforts of over 50 volunteers including the support and cooperation of the Weston schools, Weston Arts, Weston Commission for the Arts, and local drama groups. The haunted scenes utilized key events in the history of Weston as a basis for the event. Over 500 community members over three nights were able to tour the Haunted Farm, experience Halloween and learn something about the history of Weston. For the Winter holidays, the Lachat Town Farm was transformed into a dazzling holiday Candy Cane light show through the efforts of over 30 volunteers. For three nights, cars with over 1000 community members in total were able to drive through the Farm and experience the holiday light show. |
| Form 990, Part III, Line 3: Ceased Conducting or Significant Changes To Services | Particularly in response to the COVID crisis, Friends of Lachat made a series of adjustments to program services to comply with state and local health requirements and to respond to an acute need by the community for programs that families could safely attend outside their homes. The Lachat Town Farm, due to its size and topography, provided a unique space to meet these community needs.The traditional Farmers Market format was adjusted to provide for online ordering through the Lachat website of local produce and other food products that were available for pickup at the Farm. Local farmers delivered the products that were then packaged by volunteers for individual orders providing the community with a safe convenient means of obtaining local agricultural products. Four Farmers Markets were held, attracting nearly 100 individuals for each market, ordering product from over 12 local providers.Music in the Meadow concerts were converted to a drive in format that provided for limited pods of individuals that were socially distanced and the drive in concerts were expanded to provide for drive in movies as well. Over 15 events were held that attracted over 200 individuals for each event. Over a dozen volunteers helped implement each of these concerts. |

Expenses: $16,838 Revenue: $16,960 OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Classes and Small Events: A broad variety of over 25 classes and other smaller events were offered during the year. Some events were in traditional in-person format before COVID and some events adjusted for COVID-19 requirements. The classes included knitting, toddler autumn crafts, wildlife tracking, yoga at the barn; and the events included an MLK service day, women's suffrage tea, and, Mother's Day celebration. Expenses: $16,730 Revenue $23,482 OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: Drive in Movies: The drive-in concerts were expanded to provide for drive-in movies to respond to community needs, due to COVID-19, for safe, family-oriented events to attend outside of the home. Twelve drive-in movie events were held that attracted over 200 individuals for each movie. Over a dozen volunteers helped implement each of these events. Expenses: $16,349 Revenue $18,752 OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 7: Giving Garden: The Giving Garden is a thirty-two feet by ninety-five feet production garden where all the produce grown is donated to local social services for people in need. The draft IRS Form 990 was then reviewed and prepared for electronic submission by an outside accountant. A final draft was circulated, discussed and approved by the Board of Directors before filing with the IRS. |
