| Form 990-EZ, Part III, Line (28-31) | LINE 29 SOCIAL MEDIA/NEWSLETTER Our newsletter is delivered to each residence and place of business as possible in the entire neighborhood, regardless of membership, to communicate information regarding the Association, neighborhood issues, the neighborhood public school, businesses and social activities, city-wide interests and social activities, voter registration and elections, the census, and government taxes, regulations and resources. We provide contact information for all five UFPIA officers, eight UFPIA committees, our City council members and council president and state general assembly members. Detailed trash and recycling information, including items allowed, containers and storage, and pickup or drop-off times and locations, is included in every issue. In 2020, we promoted local business discounts, demonstrations and workshops, giveaways, and other neighborhood events and featured those that help fund our newsletter. 78% of our newsletter printing costs were funded by local business ads in 2020. The Fell's Point farmers' market and the Baltimore farmers' market and bazaar were promoted in the newsletter. Although many activities were cancelled due to the Pandemic, we promoted those that were still held in person or virtually. These included the New Year's Day Resolution Race for Earl's Place, a men's homeless shelter; our neighborhood theatre; Black History month in February; Bus and Brews in March and information about the new animal shelter; the launching of our new website; Baltimore Heritage's five minute history episodes; information about COVID-19 and the coronavirus; thanked our health care workers and first responders during the pandemic; helped collect food for families in need; promoted local artists; promoted Baltimore's Slow Street program which helps people use low- traffic streets for safe-distance walking, jogging, etc. across the City; the virtual MD Fleet Week on Sept. 8-11; Doors Open Baltimore's virtual tour of over 50 historic buildings held during the month of Oct.; held a National Night Out event on Oct. 6 th to promote police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie; collected supplies for the art teacher at Wolfe St. Academy, our local school; and the Creative Alliance Halloween Lantern Parade on Oct. 24th; and affordable fresh produce at Commodore John Rodgers School. In addition to the newsletter, our Association's website, (www.upperfellspoint.org) enhances communications with our neighbors and fully discloses our regulations and financials. Committees have pages and current and past newsletters can be viewed. We also post a recording from our community meetings. An electronic newsletter (e-blast) is provided bi-monthly, or when needed, and includes important items that need to be communicated. UFPIA also is on Facebook and Twitter and posts to a Google calendar which provides information and important notices to area residents, and a dedicated Upper Fell's Point Nextdoor site was created in 2017. Our PayPal and Stripe accounts can accept payments online for membership dues, donations, fund-raisers and events, as well as payments for newsletter ads and garden dues. An average of 1,200 four-page printed newsletters were composed by one member, printed by a business in the neighborhood and distributed monthly by an average of 19 volunteers, requiring a total of over 200 volunteer hours in 2020. Two Association members contributed an additional 120 volunteer hours to electronic media efforts in 2020. In addition, we launched a new website to make it more user friendly and more current and two Association members spent over 50 hours working on this project. LINE 30 COMMUNITY GARDEN The Association began maintaining three vacant lots at 1825-27- 29 E Pratt St. totaling 4,600 square ft. as a community garden in 1987. Our garden has 16 plots for 22 gardeners with a City water line and a green space used for community events. Free compost is provided for the gardeners. The garden property is protected as a permanent green space by the Baltimore Green Space land trust and was purchased from the City with funds provided by our Association. Our Association is the Baltimore Green Space Partner Organization and our Community Garden Committee co-chair is the Baltimore Green Space Site Manager for this property. In addition to maintaining their individual garden plots, three of our gardeners clear the public sidewalk in front of the garden of any snow or ice during the winter months and all of our gardeners spend over 30 hours/month from March through November to maintain the overall garden space by watering and weeding plants, cutting the grass, taking out the trash and recycles. In addition, 26 gardeners spent 163 hours to build raised bed boxes and fill them with soil; 2 gardeners spent 27 hours to remove grass and add clover for pollinators; and 5 people spent 73 hours to repair the mosaic walkway. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were unable to hold events in person but did meet virtually on several occasions. One was a Garden Ramble tour whereby 29 people attended virtually to enjoy the community garden as well as stops to houses/stoops of several of our gardeners. We also were a stop on the virtual Charm City Garden tour in July. Twenty-three Association members contributed over 1,000 volunteer hours to these efforts in 2020. LINE 31 OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES The UFPIA Education Committee organizes and sponsors events for children in our community, often in partnership with Wolfe Street Academy (WSA), a community charter school in Upper Fells Point. Although due to the pandemic we did not sponsor our usual activities in 2020, It is anticipated that activities will resume in the 2021-2022 school year as educational institutions open to in-person learning. In 2020 the Education Committee supported the following: 1) an initiative to provide necessary art supplies for the Wolfe Street Academy art teacher, Ms. Bevaqua. Over $1200 of supplies were donated and presented to the Ms. Bevaqua in November and December of 2020. 2) WSA student art notecards to help support future Education Committee Projects. In 2020 17 packs of notecards were sold for $10.00 per packet ($170.00). In 2020 the Land Use Committies activities were: 1.: Monitor zoning appeals, liquor board proceedings that may directly impact or be of interest to the Association; 2. Consulted with the Commission on Historical and Architectural Preservation on the process for and implications of pursuing an historic district designation; 3. Consulted with the City's Department of Planning on land use guidelines; 4. Led brainstorming sessions on land use guidelines to support a re-write of our guidelines. 5. Consulted with the Neighborhood Design Center on retaining them to help us prepare a community master plan. The Safety Committee held one C.O.P. walk in April with Zeke Cohen. From that meeting, the Safety Committee began setting up the Block Liaison Program. This program creates an information network between the safety committee, an individual that is a point of contact for each block, and each blocks residents. We organized a modified NNO (National Night Out) event in October. It included 3 neighborhood gatherings, a soup and salad sale fundraiser for Cafe Lighting on Ann Street, meet and greets with City Officials, and a great networking atmosphere. We spent less than half of our committees' allotted budget for the event. We continue to push a Cafe Lighting Initiative. The Traffic and Parking committee continues to look at ways to make the streets of the community safer for all, pedestrians, bicyclists, scooter riders and people in cars. The community participated with Baltimore City in giving insight for the "Complete Streets Manual". A traffic and road use survey was conducted by the committee to see what the majority of residents would like to see happen on our roads. The community participated with a "Slow Street" program which was rolled out by Baltimore City to give more activity space to residents with the closures due to Covid-19. The committee has been exploring and discussing ways to do some traffic calming measures, Daylighting at the community's intersections along with street art. UFPIA'S BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE ACTIVITIES 2020 There were over 50 volunteers (including 10 dedicated Beautification Committee members) who contributed at 1030 hours in 2020 to beautification activities. |
