As I searched Google for the due date for the 2020 Form 990, I regularly saw that the date was extended to July 15th. That seemed reasonable, given the COVID-based delay given for filing 2020 individual returns. On May 18th, I was made aware that the Google request returned the due date for the 2019 form due in 2020 rather than for the 2020 form and that the 2020 Form 990 had been due May 17th. Chagrinned, I am filing this return as promptly as I could. (I was further delayed two days by the difficulty finding a free efile for Form 990. From irs.gov, I looked at the MeF-qualified software providers and saw that they charged a fee. I called the IRS Business and Specialty Tax Line for help and finally spoke with an agent who routed me to a line that said that the IRS was too busy to answer questions. After many more hours on Google, I found Form990Online.org, which I am using for free to file. Please waive any late filing penalty, considering my inadequate and inaccurate filing due date research.
