IT INCLUDED OUTDOOR LEARNING AND NATURE HIKES, SCIENCE PODCASTS FOR KIDS, NATURE-BASED ARTS AND CRAFTS, VIRTUAL FIELD TRIPS AND ACCESS TO A MANY SUBJECTS INCLUDING ANIMALS AND BIRDS, WEATHER AND EARTH SCIENCE, OCEANOGRAPHY, ASTRONOMY AND MORE. 2.FOR 10 WEEKS IN THE SPRING WE PROVIDED A WEEKLY VIDEO SERIES OF NATURE SCIENCE LESSONS TO SUPPORT TEACHERS AND PARENTS AT THE ONSET OF THE CRISIS. THE LESSONS FOCUSED ON A VARIETY OF TOPICS INCLUDING ANIMAL HABITS, DECOMPOSERS, AND WATERSHEDS AND WE RECEIVED WONDERFUL, APPRECIATIVE FEEDBACK FROM MANY PARENTS AND TEACHERS. 3.IN THE FALL, WE OFFERED A VIRTUAL LEARNING CENTER TO SUPPORT UP TO 12 STUDENTS WHO COULD NOT ATTEND SCHOOL IN-PERSON. 4.RIVERBEND'S ACCESS PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS LIVING IN URBAN, UNDER-RESOURCED COMMUNITIES CONTINUED, ALBEIT IN A VIRTUAL FORMAT "NATURE-BASED EDUCATION VIDEO SERIES - IN LIEU OF IN-PERSON PROGRAMMING, WE DEVELOPED A SERIES OF HIGH QUALITY, EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS. STUDENT CENTERED, EACH VIDEO INTRODUCED A CONCEPT, FOR EXAMPLE, ECOSYSTEMS, AND FOLLOWED THE INQUIRY CYCLE, INVITING STUDENTS TO BECOME INTERESTED IN EXCITING AND RELEVANT CONTENT. STUDENTS ARE CHALLENGED TO CREATE AND CARRY OUT AN INVESTIGATION TO EXPLORE THEIR LOCAL SETTING. ACCOMPANYING EACH VIDEO IS AN INTERACTIVE JOURNAL PAGE THAT CAN BE PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED OR UPLOADED TO AN ONLINE CLASSROOM. IN THE FALL OF 2020: THIS PROGRAM SERVED 4TH GRADE STUDENTS IN NORRISTOWN AND UPPER DARBY (1,200 STUDENTS). "PHILADELPHIA CHILDREN ACCESS NATURE (PCAN) IS GEARED TOWARDS TEACHERS OF STUDENTS IN THE 3RD TO 5TH GRADE LIVING IN UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES. SUMMER SCIENCE INQUIRY INSTITUTE (SSII) WAS OFFERED TO 25 TEACHERS, WITH ADAPTATIONS, IN THE FIRST WEEK OF AUGUST FOR A WEEK OF LEARNING AND SCIENCE INQUIRY. WITH THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THE PROGRAM WAS DESIGNED TO SUPPORT TEACHERS IN THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS WE PREDICTED THEY WOULD FACE IN THE UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR. A COMBINATION OF SYNCHRONOUS AND ASYNCHRONOUS LEARNING WAS DEVELOPED, USING A VIRTUAL CLASSROOM TO MEET. PCAN FELLOWSHIP TEN OF THE SSII TEACHERS HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED INTO THE YEAR-LONG FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM. TEACHERS CONTINUED THEIR PRACTICE IN SCIENCE INQUIRY, TAKING THEIR SKILLS DIRECTLY INTO THEIR VIRTUAL AND IN-PERSON CLASSROOMS. EXPENSES ALSO INCLUDED 61,513 IN DONATED LEGAL FEES FOR MANAGEMENT AND GENERAL PURPOSES. AS PER THE INSTRUCTIONS TO THE FORM 990, DONATED SERVICES ARE NOT INCLUDED IN EXPENSES FOR TAX REPORTING PURPOSES. |
