| FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4B | MAKERLAB: THE MAKERLAB IS A MEMBER-GOVERNED PROGRAM OF THE POWERHOUSE THAT PROVIDES TRAINING AND ACCESS TO TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT SUPPORTING A WIDE RANGE OF SCHOOLS, INCLUDING WELDING, BLACKSMITHING, WOODWORKING, LASER CUTTING, PROGRAMMING, CNC ROUTING, MACHINING, AND 2D AND 3D MODELING. IN THE FIRST PHASE OF THE PANDEMIC, HEALTH PROVIDERS WERE CAUGHT WITHOUT ADEQUATE PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) ON HAND TO ALLOW STAFF TO PROTECT THEMSELVES FROM A HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS AIRBORNE PATHOGEN. INVENTORY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS AND SUPPLY CHAINS THAT WORK 99.9% OF THE TIME WERE SUSCEPTIBLE TO THE GLOBAL REACH AND SPEED OF THE COVID CRISIS. LOCAL HOSPITALS AND FIRST RESPONDERS LACKED THE FACE SHIELDS, MASKS, AND OTHER EQUIPMENT THAT HAVE SINCE BECOME UBIQUITOUS AT A TIME WHEN THE INCUBATION PERIOD AND MODE OF TRANSMISSION OF COVID WAS STILL POORLY UNDERSTOOD. THE MAKERLAB INCLUDES BOTH THE EQUIPMENT NEEDED TO PROTOTYPE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, A COMMUNITY OF INVENTORS AND FABRICATORS WITH THE SKILLS AND MINDSET TO RISE TO CHALLENGES LIKE THESE. WE REACHED OUT TO LOCAL EMERGENCY ROOMS AND ICUS TO ASSESS THEIR NEEDS AND OPENNESS TO UTILIZING COMMUNITY-PRODUCED SUPPLIES, AND THEIR RESPONSE WAS OVERWHELMING. WE FIELDED TWO DOZEN REQUESTS FOR ASSISTANCE IN THE FIRST WEEK AND ULTIMATELY SUPPLIED PPE TO 128 HOSPITALS, PRIMARY CARE OFFICES, FIRST RESPONDERS, AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS. THE RESPONSE FROM OUR COMMUNITY WAS EQUALLY RAPID AND BEYOND ANY OF OUR EXPECTATIONS. OVER 800 INDIVIDUALS IN OUR CITY OF LESS THAN 19,000 RESIDENTS OFFERED HELP WITH THE PROJECT AS VOLUNTEERS OR DONORS. THE MAKERLAB SERVED AS THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT HUB FOR A COMMUNITY-WIDE INITIATIVE (DUBBED THE FOUR CORNERS COVID-19 RESPONSE TEAM) TO STAND WITH THOSE AT THE FRONT LINES OF THE CRISIS. SEVERAL HUNDRED PEOPLE SEWED FACE MASKS AND HOSPITAL GOWNS IN THEIR HOMES WHILE LOCAL INDUSTRY PROVIDED SPECIALIZED PRODUCTION CAPACITY TO SUPPORT THE PROJECT. THE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS AND ENGINEERING AT FORT LEWIS COLLEGE ALONG WITH A LOCAL SHEET METAL COMPANY RAPIDLY CUT TENS OF THOUSANDS OF PLASTIC AND FABRIC PIECES FOR THE PROJECT. BEDROCK BAGS AND SOUNDTRAXX, WHICH IN NORMAL TIMES MANUFACTURE BAGS FOR LONG DISTANCE CYCLING AND MODEL TRAIN SOUND EFFECTS RESPECTIVELY, REDIRECTED THEIR STAFFS TO ASSEMBLE HOODS AND FANS FOR THE MAKERLAB-DESIGNED POWERED AIR-PURIFYING RESPIRATOR (PAPR), THE FIRST DIY MODEL PUT INTO HOSPITAL USE DURING THE COVID CRISIS. IN JUST 60 DAYS OUR VOLUNTEERS PRODUCED 23,000 FACE SHIELDS, FACE MASKS, HOSPITAL GOWNS, AND PAPRS WITH AN ESTIMATED VALUE OF OVER 500,000 AND DISTRIBUTED SUPPLIES TO 27 COMMUNITIES IN COLORADO, NEW MEXICO, AND ARIZONA - ALL AT NO COST TO RECIPIENTS. |
| FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4C | EDUCATION PROGRAMS: WITH SCHOOLS ADAPTING POLICIES ON FIELD TRIPS AND OUTSIDE VISITORS TO THEIR CAMPUSES TO PROMOTE SAFE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS, THE POWERHOUSE SHIFTED ITS FOCUS TO OFFERING ONLINE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES AND SUPPORTING STUDENTS ON DAYS THEY WERE AWAY FROM THEIR TRADITIONAL CLASSROOM SETTINGS. WE OFFERED DAILY AT-HOME STEM ACTIVITIES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES VIA SOCIAL MEDIA AND HOSTED A NINE-PART VIRTUAL SPEAKER SERIES FEATURING ASTRONAUTS, ASTRONOMERS, ENGINEERS, AND OTHERS CONNECTED TO THE SPACE PROGRAM TO COMMEMORATE THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE APOLLO 14 MISSION. AFTER SURVEYING THE COMMUNITY AND CONSIDERING STATE GUIDELINES, WE ADAPTED OUR CAMP DISCOVERY PROGRAM AND WERE ABLE TO OFFER ONE OF THE ONLY IN-PERSON SUMMER CAMP EXPERIENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY. GRANT AND SPONSORSHIP SUPPORT ALLOWED US TO CUT CLASS SIZES BY MORE THAN HALF, KEEP OUR CAMPUS CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC DURING WEEKDAYS TO PRIORITIZE CAMPERS, AND FULLY FUND REQUESTS FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. WE HOSTED OVER 200 STUDENTS FOR STEM LEARNING BETWEEN JUNE AND AUGUST. AS THE 2020-21 SCHOOL YEAR STARTED, OVER 40% OF PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS IN OUR COMMUNITY WERE EXPECTING TO LEARN FROM HOME SOME OR ALL OF EACH WEEK. WITH THE SUPPORT OF DURANGO SCHOOL DISTRICT 9-R, WE LAUNCHED THE DURANGO LEARNING LAB IN OCTOBER IN PARTNERSHIP WITH A DOZEN OTHER YOUTH-SERVING ORGANIZATIONS. THE POWERHOUSE RENTED AN AUXILIARY CLASSROOM SPACE NEXT TO THE SCIENCE CENTER AND OFFERED AN ACADEMIC SUPPORT AND ENRICHMENT PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS LEARNING REMOTELY. DESPITE THE CHALLENGES OF SCHOOL ACCESS, THE POWERHOUSE CONTINUED TO PARTNER WITH INDIVIDUAL SCHOOLS, PROVIDING ON-SITE STEM PROGRAMMING AT SCHOOLS, HOSTING VISITING SCHOOL GROUPS, AND OFFERING INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES. KEY PARTNERS IN 2020 INCLUDED THE DURANGO SCHOOL DISTRICT 9 -R, BATTLE ROCK CHARTER SCHOOL, AND BIG PICTURE HIGH SCHOOL. |
| FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4D | COMMUNITY SERVICE AND FACILITY RENTAL: THE POWERHOUSE ACTS AS THE COMMUNITY GATHERING AND CELEBRATION SPACE FOR BOTH RESIDENTS OF DURANGO AND THE SURROUNDING AREA. IN PART THIS IS DUE TO OUR ABILITY TO OFFER MEETING AND GATHERING SPACE FOR THE NUMEROUS NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS IN OUR AREA. |
