| FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION | THE MUSEUM WAS FOUNDED IN 1912 ON THE BELIEF THAT ARTS AND CULTURE HAVE THE POWER TO BRING DIVERSE GROUPS OF INDIVIDUALS TOGETHER, WHICH ULTIMATELY PROMOTES CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND STRENGTHENS THE SOCIAL FABRIC OF OUR COMMUNITIES. THIS CORE BELIEF CONTINUES TO GUIDE THE MUSEUM'S DIRECTION TODAY. MUSEUM OFFERINGS RANGE FROM EXHIBITIONS AND LECTURES TO ART CLASSES IN ITS MUSEUM SCHOOL AND ART TRIPS TO OTHER CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS. LOCATED ON 3-ACRES ALONG BEAUTIFUL BELLEVUE AVENUE IN NEWPORT, RI, THE MUSEUM'S GALLERIES ARE HOUSED IN TWO HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT BUILDINGS AND FEATURE NOTABLE SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS AS WELL AS SELECTIONS FROM ITS GROWING PERMANENT COLLECTION. THE COLLECTION CURRENTLY INCLUDES NEARLY 3,000 WORKS OF ART INCLUDING SCULPTURE, PAINTINGS, PRINTS, DRAWINGS, PHOTOGRAPHS, TEXTILES, AND GLASS ART DATING FROM THE MID-18TH CENTURY TO THE PRESENT. MUSEUM STAFF AND TRUSTEES ARE COMMITTED TO CREATING A CULTURE OF DIVERSITY, EQUITY, ACCESS, AND INCLUSION. THIS MEANS BUILDING A MORE VARIED AND INTEGRATED WORKPLACE AND BOARDROOM THAT IS REFLECTIVE OF THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE, PARTICIPATING IN IMPLICIT BIAS AWARENESS TRAINING, AND VIEWING POLICIES AND PROCEDURES THROUGH AN EQUITY LENS. OUR EXHIBITIONS AND PUBLIC PROGRAMS WILL CONTINUE TO PRESENT A BROAD REPRESENTATION OF IDEAS, IDENTITIES AND VOICES THAT ENCOURAGE RICH, OPEN AND RELEVANT DISCOURSE. CO-COLLABORATION WITH AN EXPANDED NETWORK OF COMMUNITY PARTNERS WILL CONTINUE TO ENHANCE OUR RELEVANCY. WE RECOGNIZE THE VALUE IN EXPANDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDIVIDUALS FROM UNDER-REPRESENTED GROUPS TO CREATE, LEARN, TEACH, WORK, VOLUNTEER, VISIT, AND SHARE OUR MUSEUM WITH OTHERS. AND WE BELIEVE THE COLLECTIVE SUM OF INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES, LIFE EXPERIENCES, HISTORIES, KNOWLEDGE, SELF-EXPRESSION, AND TALENT THAT OUR STAFF, TRUSTEES AND AUDIENCES BRING TOGETHER WILL HELP TO ENSURE THAT THE NEWPORT ART MUSEUM IS, AND WILL BE, A WELCOMING PLACE FOR EVERYONE. A NEW STRATEGIC PLAN WAS APPROVED AT THE SEPTEMBER, 2020 BOARD MEETING - INSIGHT 2020: A NEW DIRECTION FOR A NEW DECADE. THIS "REALISTICALLY" AMBITIOUS PLAN, DEVELOPED WITH COMMUNITY STAKEHOLDER INPUT, INCLUDES GOALS, STRATEGIES FOR ACHIEVING THEM, MEASUREMENTS OF SUCCESS, AND ASSIGNED ACCOUNTABILITY TEAMS FOR EACH GOAL. THE FIVE OVERARCHING GOALS ARE: -BE MORE RELEVANT TO THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE AND SEEK TO SERVE; -INCREASE AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING OF OUR MUSEUM'S MISSION, OFFERINGS AND IMPACT; -STRATEGICALLY SHAPE, SHARE AND INTERPRET OUR COLLECTIONS AND EXHIBITIONS; -COMMIT TO PRACTICES THAT REINFORCE A CULTURE OF LEARNING AND ENGAGEMENT; -BUILD CAPACITY TO ENSURE A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE. THE NEWPORT ART MUSEUM IS FULLY ACCREDITED BY THE AMERICAN ALLIANCE OF MUSEUMS. THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES REVIEWS AND APPROVES THE MUSEUM'S AUDITED FINANCIALS, STRATEGIC PLAN, AND ANNUAL OPERATING BUDGETS. BEST PRACTICES ARE FOLLOWED IN ALL ASPECTS OF THE MUSEUM'S GOVERNANCE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES. |
| FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4A | OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS, NEWPORT ART MUSEUM HAS EXPANDED THE BREADTH AND DEPTH OF ITS EXHIBITIONS AS EVIDENCED BY RECENT SHOWS SUCH AS "THE SHAPES OF BIRDS" IN 2018, FEATURING 19 ARTISTS FROM THE MIDDLE EAST & NORTH AFRICA, AS WELL AS A VIDEO BY SOUTH AFRICAN ARTIST WILLIAM KENTRIDGE; "GERTRUDE VANDERBILT WHITNEY: SCULPTURE" IN 2019, AN EXHIBITION ORGANIZED AND TRAVELED BY THE NORTON MUSEUM OF ART IN WEST PALM BEACH; "ANDY WARHOL: BIG SHOT" IN 2020, WARHOL'S THIRD EXHIBITION AT NEWPORT ART MUSEUM; AND THE 2021 "HAIR STORIES," FEATURING A DIVERSE GROUP OF 20 ARTISTS WITH ARTWORKS ON LOAN FROM AROUND THE UNITED STATES AND EUROPE. AN EXHIBITION FEATURING ARTWORKS OF THE ICONIC AMERICAN ARTIST GEORGIA O'KEEFFE IS PLANNED FOR 2022. THE 2020 "ANDY WARHOL: BIG SHOT" EXHIBITION FEATURED A VARIETY OF WARHOL'S PHOTOGRAPHS AND SILKSCREENS. THE ARTWORKS WERE ON TEMPORARY LOAN TO THE NEWPORT ART MUSEUM FROM COMMERCIAL GALLERIES, UNIVERSITY GALLERIES, MUSEUMS AND PRIVATE COLLECTIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. AN EXHIBITION OF THIS MAGNITUDE REQUIRED GALLERY SECURITY GUARDS DURING ALL PUBLIC VIEWING HOURS. A SPECIAL EXHIBITION OPENING PROGRAM WAS ORGANIZED AND FEATURED TWO INDIVIDUALS WHO WORKED CLOSELY WITH WARHOL IN THE SIXTIES AND SEVENTIES IN NEW YORK CITY. |
| FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4B | THE NEWPORT ART MUSEUM OFFERS YEAR-ROUND ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAMMING FOR ALL AGES AND EXPERIENCE LEVELS AT ITS MUSEUM SCHOOL. ADDITIONALLY, THE MUSEUM'S TEACHING ARTISTS PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES OFF CAMPUS AT A VARIETY OF PARTNERING ORGANIZATIONS. DUE TO COVID-RELATED RESTRICTIONS IN 2020, SOME OF THE VENUES DID NOT PARTICIPATE, SUCH AS SENIOR LIVING FACILITIES AND PUBLIC SCHOOLS. HOWEVER, OUR TEACHERS CONTINUED THE ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAM AT LIFESPAN HOSPITAL'S BRADLEY SCHOOLS, WHICH PROVIDE A ROBUST EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS WHOSE PSYCHIATRIC AND BEHAVIORAL NEEDS CANNOT BE MET IN A PUBLIC-SCHOOL SETTING. OUR ARTS INSTRUCTORS LEARNED THE BRADLEY SCHOOLS' VIRTUAL PLATFORM AND CONDUCTED THE ART CLASSES ONLINE UNTIL THE RETURN OF IN-CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION WAS APPROVED. THE MEDICAL STAFF AND ADMINISTRATORS AT THE BRADLEY SCHOOLS CONSIDER OUR MUSEUM'S ARTS INSTRUCTION A VITAL AND NECESSARY ADDITION TO THEIR CURRICULUM. |
| FORM 990, PAGE 6, PART VI, LINE 11B | A DRAFT OF FORM 990 WAS PROVIDED TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES FOR THEIR REVIEW AND COMMENT. |
| FORM 990, PAGE 6, PART VI, LINE 12C | THE CONFLICT OF INTEREST POLICY IS GIVEN TO ALL BOARD MEMBERS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND FINANCE DIRECTOR TO REVIEW AND SIGN. POTENTIAL CONFLICTS ARE EVALUATED AND A DECISION IS MADE. |
