AMONG THE 431 CLOSED MATTERS IN THE 2020 CALENDAR YEAR STUDENT ADVOCACY SUCCESSFULLY ADVOCATED FOR IMPROVED EDUCATION SERVICES IN 67% OF CASES. 80% OF CLIENTS RECEIVING SERVICES FROM STUDENT ADVOCACY ATTEND SCHOOLS IN DISTRICTS WHERE 50% OR MORE OF THE STUDENT POPULATION IS IDENTIFIED AS ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED, INDICATING THE ORGANIZATION IS SUCCESSFULLY REACHING FAMILIES MOST IN NEED AND WHO WITHOUT OUR ASSISTANCE WOULD BE UNABLE TO ACCESS THE EDUCATION SERVICES TO WHICH THEIR CHILDREN ARE LEGALLY ENTITLED. 83% OF STUDENT ADVOCACY CLIENTS ARE SEEKING SERVICES FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION RELATED MATTERS. 55% OF STUDENT ADVOCACY'S CLIENTS ARE YOUTH IN GRADES PRE-K THROUGH 6, INDICATING THAT THE ORGANIZATION IS REACHING STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES EARLY IN THEIR DEVELOPMENT WHICH HAS THE POTENTIAL OF LEADING TO IMPROVED LONG-TERM OUTCOMES REGARDING HEALTH, LANGUAGE; AND COGNITIVE, SOCIAL, AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT. 91 VOLUNTEERS DONATED 227.5 HOURS ON THE OVERCOMING THE ODDS PRE-SELECTION AND SELECTION COMMITTEES TO CHOOSE THE STUDENT HONOREES FOR THE OTO RECOGNITION CEREMONY. DURING COVID-19 SHUTDOWN STUDENT ADVOCACY CONTINUED TO PROVIDE HIGH QUALITY LEGALLY BASED EDUCATION ADVOCACY TO ITS CLIENTS IN A REMOTE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT UTILIZING ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES AND ADAPTING TO THE DIVERSE REMOTE PLATFORMS UTILIZED BY LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS OVERCOMING THE ODDS MIDDLE SCHOOL/HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM: THE OVERCOMING THE ODDS MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS PROVIDE LEGALLY BASED EDUCATION ADVOCACY SERVICES FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO ARE AT RISK FOR SCHOOL FAILURE AND/OR DROPPING OUT DUE TO PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL DISABILITIES, LEARNING CHALLENGES, TRAUMA, OR DISCIPLINARY ISSUES. THE GOAL IS TO ENSURE THAT STUDENTS RECEIVE THE EDUCATION SERVICES TO WHICH THEY ARE LEGALLY ENTITLED ENABLING THEM TO EXPERIENCE ACADEMIC SUCCESS AND REMAIN IN SCHOOL. YOUTH ARE FROM THE 11 TARGETED COMMUNITIES THAT INCLUDE ELMSFORD, GREENBURGH, MOUNT VERNON, NEW ROCHELLE, OSSINING, PEEKSKILL, PORT CHESTER, SLEEPY HOLLOW, TARRYTOWN, WHITE PLAINS AND YONKERS. ACCOMPLISHMENTS: SERVED 121 STUDENTS; OF THE 111 MATTERS CLOSED 62% OF STUDENTS RECEIVED SERVICES THAT WERE MORE APPROPRIATE FOR THEIR LEARNING NEEDS. THE CONTRACT SERVED THOSE STUDENTS IN WESTCHESTER COUNTY WHO WERE MOST IN NEED AS 80% CAME FROM SCHOOL DISTRICTS WHERE 50% OR MORE OF THE POPULATION IS IDENTIFIED AS ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED. |

WHILE THE RIGHT START PROGRAM FOCUSES ON YOUNGER CHILDREN, THOSE IN GRADE K THROUGH GRADE 5, STUDENT ADVOCACY WILL ALSO SERVE ANY YOUTH WITH A READING LEVEL THAT IS TWO OR MORE YEARS BELOW GRADE LEVEL UNDER THIS PROGRAM. ACCOMPLISHMENTS: SERVED 88 STUDENTS; AMONG THE 75 MATTERS CLOSED, 82% OF STUDENTS RECEIVED SERVICES THAT WERE MORE APPROPRIATE FOR THEIR LEARNING NEEDS. THE CONTRACT SERVED THOSE STUDENTS IN WESTCHESTER COUNTY WHO WERE MOST IN NEED AS 94% CAME FROM SCHOOL DISTRICTS WHERE 50% OR MORE OF THE POPULATION IS IDENTIFIED AS ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED. READY FOR LIFE PROGRAM: THE READY FOR LIFE PROGRAM PROVIDED EDUCATION ADVOCACY SERVICES FOR 31 STUDENTS WITH AN IEP, AGES 15 TO 21, TO ENSURE THAT THEY RECEIVE AN APPROPRIATE TRANSITION PLAN. AS PART OF THE READY FOR LIFE PROGRAM ADVOCATES WORK WITH THE STUDENT, FAMILY AND SCHOOL PERSONNEL TO ENSURE THAT A TRANSITION PLAN IS DEVELOPED THAT MEETS THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA: A) IS DESIGNED TO BE A RESULTS-ORIENTED PROCESS, THAT IS FOCUSED ON IMPROVING THE ACADEMIC AND FUNCTIONAL ACHIEVEMENT OF THE CHILD WITH A DISABILITY TO FACILITATE THE CHILD'S MOVEMENT FROM SCHOOL TO POST-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION, VOCATIONAL EDUCATION, INTEGRATED EMPLOYMENT (INCLUDING SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT), CONTINUING AND ADULT EDUCATION, ADULT SERVICES, INDEPENDENT LIVING, OR COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION; (B) IS BASED ON THE INDIVIDUAL CHILD'S NEEDS, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE CHILD'S STRENGTHS, PREFERENCES, AND INTERESTS; (C) INCLUDES INSTRUCTION, RELATED SERVICES, COMMUNITY EXPERIENCES, THE DEVELOPMENT OF EMPLOYMENT AND OTHER POST-SCHOOL ADULT LIVING OBJECTIVES, AND, WHEN APPROPRIATE, ACQUISITION OF DAILY LIVING SKILLS AND FUNCTIONAL VOCATIONAL EVALUATION.
