Student Scholarship Criterion.I - ECONOMIC NEED - The student must demonstrate an economic need for financial assistance in order to attend college. The factors to be considered in determining economic need should include:(a) The financial resources of the student, including potential earnings from student employment during the summer and during the academic year.(b) The financial resources of the family, taking into account the other financial obligations of the family.(c) The estimated cost of attending college.(d) The availability of other sources of funds to assist the student in paying for college.II - ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS - The student must meet the following academic criteria:(a) The student must have a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0 or above on the 4.0 scale.(b) The student must attend a four-year college or university which is accredited by the governing regional accreditation body for the school and enroll in a four-year degree program.(c) The student must declare a major in, or if freshmen are not allowed to declare majors, intend to study in the field of the physical sciences.The physical sciences would be defined to include all engineering majors, computer science, chemistry, physics, biology, botany, mathematics, oceanography, geology, pre-dental, premedical, pre-veterinarian, or nursing studies.Other than the items mentioned above, there are no mandatory criteria which a scholarship candidate must meet. However, the following characteristics of the student should be viewed favorably by the Board of Trustees in making their final decision relative to the granting of scholarships:(a) The student is a member of a disadvantaged minority group.(b) The degree to which the student's position as a member of a disadvantaged minority group reduces the student's prospects for access to the other sources of funds as described in Paragraph I (d) above.(c) The prospect that assistance by the Foundation to the particular student may encourage other disadvantaged minority students to pursue higher education.(d) The student has actively engaged in community and/or school-related extracurricular activities which evidence well-rounded individual development.(e) The student has exhibited qualities of leadership, good character and maturity during his or her high school years.The estimated range of the amount of the individual's scholarship will be between $1,000.00 and $7,000.00 per recipient per academic year which may be applied towards tuition, laboratory, books, and room and board expenses only. |
