| FORM 990 | MISSION, STRATEGY, PEOPLE WE SERVE: YES SHE CAN, FOUNDED IN 2013, HELPS YOUNG WOMEN WITH AUTISM AND RELATED SOCIAL AND LEARNING DISABILITIES DEVELOP TRANSFERABLE JOB SKILLS THROUGH IMMERSIVE LEARNING. MORE THAN 80 PERCENT OF ADULTS WITH AUTISM ARE NOT EMPLOYED. TRADITIONAL APPROACHES TO HELP PEOPLE WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES TO BECOME EMPLOYED HAVE NOT BEEN EFFECTIVE FOR PEOPLE WITH AUTISM. YES SHE CAN'S DISTINCTIVE DIFFERENCE IS OUR APPROACH OF TEACHING CORE SKILLS IN AN AUTHENTIC BUSINESS SETTING WITH COLLABORATION AMONG EXPERTS IN AUTISM AND IN BUSINESS. WE SERVE YOUNG WOMEN AGES 18-28, WHO WANT TO BECOME EMPLOYED. A SOME OF THE PARTICIPANTS HAVE GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE OR ARE ATTENDING COLLEGE CLASSES, WHILE OTHERS HAVE COMPLETED HIGH SCHOOL; MOST PARTICIPANTS DO NOT HAVE ANY OTHER ACTIVITIES IN THEIR LIVES. PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM IS BASED ON AN INTEGRATED ECOSYSTEM: TRAINEES, COACHES, PEER MENTORS, CURRICULUM, MERCHANDISE DONATIONS, AND CUSTOMERS. UNTIL MARCH 21, 2020, OUR PROGRAM WAS OPERATING IN PERSON AT GIRL AGAIN, A RESALE BOUTIQUE FOR REFURBISHED AMERICAN GIRL DOLLS AND ACCESSORIES, LOCATED IN WHITE PLAINS, NY. BY APRIL 1ST OUR PROGRAM WAS CONVERTED TO A VIRTUAL SETTING. TRAINEES WERE PAIRED IN DYADS AND MET WITH A COACH SEVERAL TIMES PER WEEK THROUGH ZOOM TO PERFORM MANY OF THE TASKS THEY DID AT THE STORE. PARENTS PICKED UP MERCHANDISE AND RETURNED COMPLETED WORK EVERY TWO WEEKS TO THE STORE. TRAINEES PARTICIPATED AS A GROUP IN A WEEKLY SKILLS CLASS FOCUSING ON JOB SEARCH TASKS INCLUDING ASSESSING PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES, CREATING RESUMES AND LINKEDIN PROFILES, PRACTICING NETWORKING, AND EXPLORING JOB LISTINGS. THROUGH VOLUNTEER NY, REGENERON EMPLOYEES PARTICIPATED WITH THE TRAINEES IN SEVERAL INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEWING WORKSHOPS. TRAINEES WHO HAD PART TIME JOBS HAD THEIR HOURS REDUCED OR WERE TERMINATED DURING THE YEAR AND THEY CONTINUED TO PARTICIPATE IN OUR PROGRAM. SEVERAL NEW TRAINEES JOINED WHO LIVED FURTHER AWAY AND BENEFITED FROM OUR REMOTE PROGRAMMING. THE RESALE STORE IS RUN FOR THE EXPLICIT PURPOSE OF TRAINING INCLUDING INTERACTING WITH THE PUBLIC, ENABLING TRAINEES TO PRACTICE SKILLS AND ENABLING THE PUBLIC TO GAIN FIRST-HAND EXPERIENCE WITH WORKERS WITH DISABILITIES. AS REQUIRED BY NEW YORK STATE, GIRL AGAIN WAS CLOSED FROM MARCH 22ND- JUNE 8TH. WE LOST 3 MONTHS OF REVENUE. WHEN THE STORE WAS ABLE TO REOPEN, TRAINEES CONTINUED TO WORK REMOTELY. ONLY ONE STAFF PERSON WORKED AT THE STORE AT A TIME. WE USED A SCHEDULING APP SO THAT CUSTOMERS COULD BOOK THEIR SHOPPING TIME. SURPRISINGLY, CUSTOMERS CAME BACK. MORE THAN 90 PERCENT OF MERCHANDISE FOR THE RESALE BOUTIQUE IS PROVIDED BY DONATIONS. DONORS SEND THEIR AMERICAN GIRL COLLECTIONS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY INCLUDING CALIFORNIA, TEXAS, VIRGINIA AND NEW HAMPSHIRE. DURING THE "COVID SHUTDOWN" DONATIONS CONTINUED TO POUR IN, YES SHE CAN HAS RECEIVED DONATIONS OF MERCHANDISE FROM 320 INDIVIDUALS, A 15% INCREASE OVER 2019. STAFF YES SHE CAN STAFF COACHES ALL HAVE MASTER'S DEGREES IN SOCIAL WORK. WE PAIR VOLUNTEER COACHES WHO ARE SOCIAL WORKERS AND PSYCHOLOGISTS WITH OUR PROFESSIONAL STAFF COACHES TO EXTEND OUR CAPACITY AND SERVE MORE TRAINEES WITH GREATER SUPPORTS. IN 2020 WE RECEIVED A GRANT FROM THE FAR FUND TO HELP COVER THE COST OF AN ADDITIONAL STAFF COACH. VOLUNTEER PEER MENTORS HAD BEEN AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE PROGRAM WHEN WE WORKED IN THE STORE. WE NOW USE MENTORS TO JOIN OUR PROGRAM VIRTUALLY AND ENGAGE WITH OUR TRAINEES. GOAL AND OUTCOME. OUR GOAL IS FOR EACH TRAINEE TO GAIN PART-TIME EMPLOYMENT WITH OR WITHOUT SUPPORTS. YES SHE CAN DOES NOT PROVIDE JOB DEVELOPMENT OR JOB PLACEMENT. PARTICIPANTS QUALIFY FOR SERVICES FROM NY STATE VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION SERVICES (ACCES-VR). MOST PARTICIPANTS QUALIFY FOR MEDICAID WAIVER SERVICES THROUGH NY STATE OFFICE FOR PEOPLE WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES (OPWDD). THE ORGANIZATIONS FUNDED BY THESE AGENCIES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR JOB DEVELOPMENT AND PLACEMENT. WHILE SOME OF OUR TRAINEES HAVE HAD SUCCESS WITH THESE AGENCIES, STARTING IN MARCH, 2020, THEY ESSENTIALLY SHUT DOWN OPERATIONS. EMPLOYMENT OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES HAS BEEN SEVERELY IMPACTED BY COVID, TO A GREATER EXTENT THAN ANY OTHER MINORITY. P&L OVERVIEW. REVENUE COMES FROM SALES OF MERCHANDISE AT GIRL AGAIN, INDIVIDUAL DONATIONS, A BENEFIT EVENT, GRANTS, AND FEE-FOR-SERVICE. COVID IMPLICATIONS: STORE REVENUE WAS DOWN OVER 2019 DUE TO STORE CLOSURE. YES SHE CAN RECEIVED PAYROLL PROTECTION PLAN (PPP) FUNDING IN APRIL, 2020 AS WELL AS AN ECONOMIC INJURY DISASTER LOAN (EIDL) FORGIVABLE LOAN. IN ADDITION, THE FAR FUND PROVIDED AN EMERGENCY GRANT. THE ANNUAL FUNDRAISING EVENT SCHEDULED FOR MARCH 25, 2020, WAS POSTPONED UNTIL SEPTEMBER 30, 2020, AND WAS HELD VIRTUALLY. |
