Explanation:
We had an ongoing issue that did not resolve with you until mid 2020. At that time we were deep in covid related issues and cancelling our season and struggling to stay afloat. we are doing all required items to get current as fast as possible. 02/10/2020 DEPARTEMENT OF TREASURY INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE OGDEN UT 84201-0074 We are writing to you in reference to Notice CP141L dated February 3, 2020 in which you detail the penalties and fees for our late filing of the 2017 year taxes. We were penalized $20 per day for our 990's and for form 5227 for a total of $6412.15. Please understand that we have always strived to complete our taxes within a timely fashion though using the extension periods we have not had this issue until the 2017 season. There a several factors that were beyond our control that led to our tardiness, first our accountant downsized her business and after being assured she would keep us that did not become the case and we were left without someone. Secondly our hard drive that contained our computer records crashed after doing everything we could we sent it originally to a local recovery center in January. The company kept it for 4 months and returned it to us stating there was nothing they could do to recover it and to try elsewhere. We then sent it to a national recovery specialist that assured us they could recover it in Late July this proved to be false 10 minutes after they charged us $750 for their services. We lost all computerized records from Dec. 2016, the last back, up to January 2018. By the time we were made aware of the magnitude of our situation we were in the midst of our busiest season and could not address it until later. Over the winter, our secretary (a volunteer) spent those months recovering membership data, events, income, expenses from hard copies one by one. We filed them as promptly as humanly possible with the issues at hand. We ask that you please remove the entirety of the late penalties, $6412.15 as it would be financially devastating to our organization and send us in to bankruptcy.
