WE HELD ZOOM CALLS WITH WV'S REPRESENTATIVES AND SENATORS IN WASHINGTON DC TO DISUSS INITIATIVES THAT COULD UNDERMINE THE ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT (ESA) AND EDUCATED THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE ESA, THE LAND AND WATER CONSERVATION ACT FUNDING AND NEW RIVER NATIONAL PARK. WE SUPPORTED NEW FUNDING FOR STATE PARKS THROUGH AN ENDOWMENT FUND. THIS PROPOSAL CAME FROM THE DIRECT OF THE WV DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES AND WAS PASSED BY THE WEST VIRGINIA LEGISLATURE. WE RECEIVED A GRANT FROM THE WV DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION WATERSHED PROGRAM TO DESIGN A NEW ACTIVE WATER TREATMENT FACILITY ON THE NORTH FORK AND HIRED AN ENGINEERING FIRM TO DESIGN THE NEW AMD TREATMENT SYSTEM. IT WILL CAPTURE AND TREAT POLLUTED WATER FROM THREE SITES ALONG THE NORTH FORK. WE COMPLETED A WATERSHED BASED PLAN FOR BEAVER CREEK OF THE BLACKWATER RIVER WITH FUNDS FROM THE WV DEP GRANTS PROGRAM AND CONTINUED MONITORING THIS TRIBUTARY. WE MONITORED SAND RUN OF THE NORTH FORK FOR WATER QUALITY AND FECAL COLIFORM. WE LED AN EDUCATIONAL TOUR (WEARING MASKS) ALONG ITS BANKS IN THOMAS CITY PARK AND EXPLAINED THE POLLUTION PROBLEMS TO THOMAS CITY COUNCIL. |

THE WORK WAS DONE BY AMERICORPS MEMBERS UNDER THE CONSERVATION LEGACY PROGRAM. WE RECEIVED A MAJOR GRANT FROM THE WV ABANDONED MINE LANDS PILOT PROGRAM TO CREATE THE BLACKWATER LOOP TRAIL LINKING THE TOWNS OF THOMAS AND DAVIS ALONG THE FOREST SERVICE RAIL TRAIL AND THEN ON BLACKWATER FALLS STATE PARK LAND BY BUILDING A PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE OVER THE NORTH FORK OF THE BLACKWATER AT DOUGLAS FALLS. WE HIRED A PLANNER FOR THIS PROJECT IN SETPEMBER. WE RECEIVED A GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL FOREST FOUNDATION TO REMOVE INVASIVE SPECIES AND PLANT NATIVES ALONG 3.8 MILES OF THE SAME RAIL TRAIL AND BEGAN THAT WORK IN THE FALL OF 2020. WE EXPANDED OUR TRAIL PLANNING NORTH INTO NEIGHBORING COUNTIES AND INTO THE STATE OF MARYLAND FOLLOWING THE NORTH BRANCH OF THE POTOMAC RIVER AND THE FORMER RAILROAD GRADE OF THE WESTERN MARYLAND RAILROAD. TUCKER COUNTY RAILROAD HERITAGE: UNDER A GRANT FROM THE WEST VIRGINIA HUMANITIES FOUNDATIOIN WE WORKED WITH THE FOREST SERVICE ARCHAEOLOGIST TO PLACE ELVEN INTERPRETIVE SIGNS ON RAILROAD HISTORY ALONG THE RAIL TRAIL NEAR THOMAS, WV. WE HOSTED THREE ZOOM WEBINARS ON THIS TOPIC. WE ALSO CREATED AND PLACED FIVE HISTORIC SIGNS IN DAVIS RIVERFRONT PARK THAT EXPLAIN THE HISTORIC SAWMILL THA STOOD THERE FROM 1886-1924. CLIMATE CHANGE: WE RECEIVED GRANTS FROM THE MOSAIC FOUNDATION THROUGH THE PISCES FOUNDATION AND THE DUNN FOUNDATION AND PRESENTED CLIMATE SCIENCE INFORMATION TO A CHARLESTON WV AUDIENCE IN FEBRUARY. WE RECEIVED FUNDING FROM THE WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT A STAFFER TO ORGANIZE OUR PROGRAMS.
