| FORM 990, PART I, LINE 1 (CONTINUED) | our three mandates: - CELEBRATING OUR SWISS CULTURE - PRESERVING OUR SWISS HERITAGE - EMBRACING OUR SWISS ROOTS The Swiss Center of North America is a vibrant cultural center; a heritage resource; and home for irreplaceable pieces of our Swiss past, and present. We have the preceding objectives for the Tritt Library and Archives which is an important part of the Swiss Center of North America. |
| FORM 990, PART III, LINE 1 (CONTINUED) | - CELEBRATING OUR SWISS CULTURE - PRESERVING OUR SWISS HERITAGE - EMBRACING OUR SWISS ROOTS The Swiss Center of North America is a vibrant cultural center; a heritage resource; and home for irreplaceable pieces of our Swiss past, and present. We have the preceding objectives for the Tritt Library and Archives which is an important part of the Swiss Center of North America. |
| FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A (CONTINUED) | We put together a panel of Midwest business leaders for a roundtable discussion on economic expansion and investment. Strengthening connections continued with a March trip to Switzerland to coordinate the 175th anniversary of the Village of New Glarus, WI with the Canton (state) of Glarus, Switzerland. A meeting was also held at the Landesmuseum Zurich, which is the national art museum of Switzerland. In 2021, the museum will be holding an exhibition of stereoviews from the Tritt Archives at the Swiss Center of North America. Unfortunately, as COVID-19 grew into a pandemic, Switzerland meetings were cancelled including the Organization of the Swiss Abroad. Zoom became the meeting venue of choice and the Swiss Center participated in virtual tours of the building with several Swiss organizations including the Twin Cities Swiss American Association, and the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington, D.C. The preservation of Swiss cultural heritage continued despite the pandemic. Historical records and material goods were donated throughout 2020 including: - Historical family records - Antique Swiss artifacts including a large Swiss flag which today flies over the Swiss Center - Programs and memorabilia from the North American Swiss Singing Alliance. The Swiss Center is working to collect all items from the Saengerfests held every 3 years for the past 150 years - Handmade dolls as the donor's mother wanted her daughter to remember her life in the Swiss Toggenburg - Family genealogies Two donations of note were received in 2020. In August, the Swiss Center received a large and valuable donation from Karin Reuss-Artois of Florida. It included artifacts from her father, Prinz Reuss who is now deceased. Because Karin has no remaining family she wants the Swiss Center to preserve her treasured items which include: - 2 silver candelabras aproximately 115 years old with inscription & dates given to her grandparents upon their wedding in 1905 - 1 silver document holder with inscription and initials of her father - A travel icon with ivory and jewels and a larger prayer icon which would have been used in the home - Wall clock with pedestal that Karin believes is as old as the candelabras - 35 original Swiss Mortgage Notes hand written. The oldest note comes from 1425 The second larger donation came from the Dorothy Cameron Estate. Mrs. Cameron of Columbus, Ohio passed away March 2, 2020. She visited the Swiss Center in the past and talked to both Beth and Don Tritt about her woodcarvings and other Swiss items she would like the Swiss Center to have following her death. President Beth Zurbuchen personally supervised the packing and transfer of Swiss woodcarvings: - Carved tip-top table with elk motif - Two basswood gnome carvings - Two basswood St. Bernard dogs - Two basswood elk - Bernese bear coat rack With the growth in archival and material goods donations, remodeling of a portion of the lower level was completed. It included archival appropriate construction as well as HVAC improvements and dehumidification. Zurbuchen and Bekah Stauffacher, New Glarus Chamber executive, are the co-chairs of the 175th anniversary of the New Glarus settlement. In May it was determined the 4-day event could not be held at the end of July, but a 175+1 would be held the following year. A second important meeting was also canceled. The Swiss American Historical Society was scheduled to hold its annual meeting at the Swiss Center in October. A decision to cancel was made due as membership is in the age group most susceptible to the Corona virus. As part of our commitment to be a strong community partner, the Swiss Center became the site for weekly COVID 19 testing and later for vaccinations. The New Glarus Community Fund approved two Swiss Center grant proposals. The first is for $5,000 for fireworks during the 175th +1 celebration in 2020. The second was a $5,000 grant for a "Pollinator Beautification" project next spring. This project would refresh the gardens at the Swiss Center. |
