DURING THIS TIME, 98 STUDENTS WERE SERVED DAILY. THE CENTER PROVIDED DAILY TRANSPORTATION FROM THE SCHOOLS TO THE LEARNING FACILITY. EACH STUDENT SPENT 3 HOURS PER AFTERNOON AT THE CENTER TOTALING 105 HOURS PER STUDENT DURING THE FIRST PART OF THE SCHOOL YEAR PRIOR TO CLOSING DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. THE CENTER SERVED OVER 3,430 NUTRITIOUS MEALS AND OVER 3,430 HEALTHY SNACKS DURING THIS TIME. DURING THIS SAME PERIOD, THE CENTER PROVIDED OVER 35 HOURS OF GUIDED PHYSICAL FITNESS ACTIVITIES TO EACH STUDENT, AND OVER 35 HOURS OF ENRICHMENT TO EACH CHILD INCLUDING BIBLE STUDY, ART, MUSIC, BALLET, PERCUSSION, ROBOTICS, MINDFULNESS, AND ATHLETICS. THE CENTER ALSO PROVIDED OVER 35 HOURS OF HOMEWORK ASSISTANCE, TUTORING, AND TEST PREPARATION ASSISTANCE TO EACH STUDENT. DURING THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY, THE STUDENTS AND STAFF CELEBRATED AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH AND ART CLASS PROJECTS CENTERED ON AFRICAN HISTORY. ON MARCH 13, 2020, THE GOVERNOR OF ALABAMA ISSUED A STATE OF EMERGENCY AND CLOSED ALL PUBLIC SCHOOLS. THE CENTER ALSO CLOSED TO PROTECT THE HEALTH OF ITS STUDENTS, STAFF, AND VOLUNTEERS. THE CENTER'S TEACHERS WORKED WITH LOCAL SCHOOL TEACHERS, PARENTS, VOLUNTEER TUTORS, AND STUDENTS TO ESTABLISH REMOTE TUTORING BY PHONE. THE CENTER'S VOLUNTEER TUTORS AND TEACHERS CONTINUED TO ASSIST STUDENTS WITH MATH AND READING UNTIL THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. VOLUNTEER TUTORS WERE PROVIDED COPIES OF ASSIGNMENTS AND WERE ABLE TO HELP STUDENTS COMPLETE ASSIGNMENTS AND STAY ON TRACK. THE CENTER DISTRIBUTED 13 REFURBISHED DESKTOP COMPUTERS ALONG WITH MONITORS, KEYBOARDS, AND AGE-APPROPRIATE LEARNING ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS TO STUDENTS WHO DID NOT HAVE A COMPUTER. THE CENTER RE-OPENED ON SEPT 21, 2020 FOR IN-PERSON TUTORING IN COMPLIANCE WITH CDC AND STATE PROTOCOLS. THE CENTER SERVED 82 STUDENTS. THE STUDENTS WERE DIVIDED INTO 2 COHORT GROUPS AND RECEIVED 3 HOURS OF TUTORING 2 DAYS PER WEEK. THE CENTER'S STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS PROVIDED OVER 111 HOURS OF TUTORING DURING THIS PERIOD. THE CENTER PROVIDED OVER 1,517 SNACKS TO STUDENTS PRIOR TO TUTORING. STUDENTS WERE PROVIDED A WELL-BALANCED NUTRITIOUS MEAL TO TAKE HOME WHEN THEY LEFT THE CENTER. THE CENTER PROVIDED OVER 1,517 MEALS DURING THE FALL SEMESTER. THREE STUDENTS RECEIVED ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS TO PRIVATE SCHOOLS DUE TO VOLUNTEER ASSISTANCE. ANOTHER STUDENT WITH DYSLEXIA WAS ABLE TO ATTEND A PRIVATE SCHOOL SPECIALIZING IN DYSLEXIA DUE TO VOLUNTEER INTERVENTION AND SUPPORT. THE CENTER'S TEACHERS COMMUNICATED WITH THE STUDENTS' SCHOOLTEACHERS TO ADDRESS ANY ACADEMIC ISSUES AND ENSURE THAT EACH STUDENT'S NEEDS WERE ADDRESSED BOTH DURING IN-PERSON CLASSES AND REMOTE LEARNING. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, THE CENTER DISTRIBUTED DONATED FOOD, HOUSEHOLD AND PERSONAL ITEMS TO THE STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. THESE ITEMS WERE DONTED BY LOCAL BUSINESSES, CHURCHES, AND INDIVIDUALS. THE DONATED ITEMS INCLUDED 76 BACKPACKS FILLED WITH SCHOOL SUPPLIES, 82 WINTER COATS, 41 THANKSGIVING DINNERS (INCLUDING TURKEYS), CHRISTMAS TOYS FOR 96 CHILDREN, BALLET COSTUMES FOR THE GIRLS, 41 PACKAGES OF TOILET TISSUE, 24 PACKAGES OF PAPER TOWELS, 33 BOTTLES OF HAND SANITIZER, 115 BOTTLES OF HAND SOAP, 10 PACKAGES OF CLOROX WIPES, 154 TUBES OF TOOTHPASTE, 248 TOOTH BRUSHES, 233 PACKS OF BAR SOAP, 127 CONTAINERS OF LAUNDRY DETERGENT, 98 BOTTLES OF SHAMPOO, 98 BOTTLES OF CONDITIONER, ADDITIONAL GROCERIES FOR 34 FAMILIES IN NEED, 3 BEDS FOR CHILDREN ALONG WITH MATTRESSES, BOX SPRINGS, SHEETS, BEDSPREADS, AND TOWELS, 1 REFRIGERATOR, AND $7,085 IN GIFT CARDS FOR FOOD. |

VOLUNTEERS AND STUDENTS MET WEEKLY BY PHONE TO READ TOGETHER AND DISCUSS THE BOOKS, AND TO WRITE IN THE STUDENT'S JOURNALS. THE CENTER'S STAFF MAINTAINED CONTACT WITH PARENTS TO STAY INFORMED OF THE NEEDS AND ISSUES OF THE STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER. DURING THE SUMMER OF 2020, THE CENTER'S STAFF DISTRIBUTED OVER 100 GROCERY GIFT CARDS AND MORE THAN 630 FRESH FOOD PACKAGES TO THE CENTER FAMILIES TO SUPPLEMENT NUTRITION. |
