THIS EXPANSION INTO A YEAR-ROUND PROGRAM STARTED AS OF JANUARY 2021. THE 2021 YOUTH LEADERSHIP TEAM DECIDED TO CALL THIS NEW, YEAR-ROUND PROGRAM TUCSON YOUTH AND PEACE (TYP). ACTIVITIES DURING 2021 INCLUDED ORGANIZING SEVERAL MONTHLY PRESENTATIONS IN KEEPING WITH A THEME FOR THE MONTH (E.G., A VIRTUAL PANEL OF WOMEN ACTIVISTS IN MARCH FOR WOMENS HISTORY MONTH; A VIRTUAL PANEL PRESENTATION AND A VIRTUAL WORKSHOP DURING APRIL IN CONJUNCTION WITH TAKE BACK THE NIGHT FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH; A VIRTUAL WORKSHOP IN MAY FOR MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH). IN ADDITION, TYP TOOK LEADERSHIP TO CALL TOGETHER THE 2021 ADULT LOGISTICS TEAM TO COLLABORATIVELY PLAN THE 10TH ANNUAL YOUTH AND PEACE CONFERENCE, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE 2021 YOUTH LEADERSHIP TEAM. THE ADULT LOGISTICS TEAM IS MADE UP OF REPRESENTATIVES OF VARIOUS COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS THAT SHARE IN THE COMMITMENT TO CONTINUE ORGANIZING AND CONDUCTING THIS ANNUAL YOUTH & PEACE CONFERENCE. THE YOUTH LEADERSHIP TEAM TAKES RESPONSIBILITY FOR SELECTING THE TITLE AND THEME FOR EACH YEARS CONFERENCE. FOR 2021, THE YOUTH TEAM CHOSE TO TITLE THE CONFERENCE, FOSTERING EQUITABLE EDUCATION BY PRIORITIZING SAFE & DIVERSE DIALOGUE. THE 2021 CONFERENCE WAS HELD VIRTUALLY ON NOV. 19, 2021 ON A ZOOM PLATFORM PROVIDED BY PIMA COMMUNITY COLLEGE. A TOTAL OF 131 YOUTH AND ADULTS PARTICIPATED IN OPENING AND CLOSING CEREMONIES THAT WERE MCD BY TWO MEMBERS OF THE 2021 YOUTH LEADERSHIP TEAM AND SELECTED ONE OF EIGHT WORKSHOPS TO ATTEND. IN ADDITION, THERE WERE 13 DIALOGUE CIRCLES HOSTED AND FACILITATED BY THE CENTER FOR COMMUNITY DIALOGUE & TRAINING THAT ALLOWED ALL PARTICIPANTS TO EXPRESS THEIR VIEWPOINTS ABOUT HOW SCHOOLS AND TEACHERS CAN CREATE A SAFER AND MORE INCLUSIVE SPACE FOR STUDENTS. IN ADDITION, GRANT PROPOSALS WERE SUBMITTED TO CREATE A MORE SUSTAINABLE FINANCIAL BASE FOR THIS NOW YEAR-ROUND YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM. LINE 29 - FLUTES FOR VETS: FLUTES FOR VETS (FFV) HELD 3-4 CLASSES EVERY MONTH WITH 5-10 PARTICIPANTS PER CLASS, TEACHING VETERANS HOW TO PLAY FLUTES. FFV PURCHASED SEVERAL BEGINNER FLUTES DURING THE YEAR, THAT WERE GIVEN TO ANY VETERAN WHO REQUESTED ONE. THIS WAS ABOUT 4 PER MONTH, SO ABOUT 48 FOR THE YEAR. IF THEY ALSO TOOK CLASSES AND FINISHED THEY WERE GIVEN A WOODEN HANDMADE FLUTE, NATIVE AMERICAN IN STYLE. FFV ALSO HOSTED SEVERAL VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES, BOTH IN SIERRA VISTA AND IN TUCSON, FOR THANKSGIVING MEALS AND CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY GIFTING AND MEAL. IN ADDITION, ONE OF THE MILITARY ORCHESTRAS HONORED FLUTES FOR VETS, BY ADDING A NATIVE AMERICAN FLUTE PIECE TO THE PROGRAM.THE NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF FFV, HIRED IN THE LAST QUARTER OF 2021, TRAVELLED AT THE END OF THE YEAR TO VISIT OTHER VETERANS IN OTHER STATES TO TALK ABOUT THE PROGRAM AND ENCOURAGE DEVELOPMENT OF SIMILAR PROGRAMS. LINE 30 - NONVIOLENCE LEGACY PROGRAM: THE NONVIOLENCE LEGACY PROGRAM (NLP) IS A MULTI-GENERATIONAL, MULTI-CULTURAL COLLECTIVE WORKING TO INCREASE PEACE, NONVIOLENCE, CARING, KINDNESS, AND JUSTICE IN SOUTHERN ARIZONA. NLP BEGAN A MAJOR PROJECT IN 2021 TO BE ABLE TO START OFFERING A LEVEL II KINGIAN NONVIOLENCE CERTIFICATION TRAINING PROGRAM. NLP REACHED OUT TO A NATIONAL KINGIAN NONVIOLENCE COORDINATING COMMITTEE (KNCC) MADE UP OF PEOPLE AND ORGANIZATIONS DOING NONVIOLENCE TRAINING WORK AROUND THE COUNTRY. NLP JOINED WITH OTHER MEMBERS OF THIS NATIONAL NETWORK OF KINGIAN NONVIOLENCE TRAINERS TO PLAN AND PRODUCE A LEVEL II NONVIOLENCE TRAINING PROGRAM. THERE WERE MANY MEETINGS HELD EVERY WEEK FOR SEVERAL MONTHS IN 2021. ON NOV. 3, NLP CONDUCTED A VIRTUAL PRESENTATION FOR THE KNCC GROUP ABOUT THE NEUROLOGICAL IMPACT OF DEALING WITH STRONG NEGATIVE EMOTIONS AS A NEW TOPIC TO BE ADDED TO THE 2-DAY CORE INTRODUCTION TO KINGIAN NONVIOLENCE TRAINING PROGRAM. THE NONVIOLENCE LEGACY PROGRAM ALSO STRENGTHENED ITS INVOLVEMENT WITH SEVERAL NETWORKS AND COALITIONS IN THE 85705 ZIP CODE AREA OF TUCSON IN ORDER TO WORK COLLABORATIVELY TO CREATE POSITIVE CHANGES IN THIS HIGH RISK, HIGH CRIME NEIGHBORHOOD. FINALLY, WORK WAS DONE TO BEGIN OFFERING VARIOUS VIRTUAL TRAININGS ABOUT KINGIAN NONVIOLENCE, SOME IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PHOENIX PEACE BUILDERS (ANOTHER GROUP AFFILIATED WITH THE CULTURE OF PEACE ALLIANCE) AND ALSO IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE KINGIAN NONVIOLENCE COORDINATING COMMITTEE. |
