| Part III 4a | Conference: Missouri Main Street Connection, Inc. (MMSC) hosts a State Conference each year to educate Missouri communities. In 2020, this conference was to be hosted in Kansas City, Missouri at the end of July, but because of the Covid pandemic the conference was canceled for the year. MMSC still had a few expenses that had been paid prior to the pandemic. |
| Part III 4b | Workshops and Consulting Assistance: Training is offered for nominal fees or no cost to the attendees. Participants in the training include community development groups, local Main Street organizations, preservation groups, city and county officials, specialists in preservation of historic buildings, downtown betterment groups, chambers of commerce, and other groups interested in preservation and revitalization of historic districts. Missouri Main Street selected topics for the 2020 workshops and conferences that will help the existing revitalization groups strengthen their local programs and help those starting a revitalization program to achieve success quickly. The training in regional workshops focuses on the development of revitalization skills for governing boards, staff and volunteers who support the local revitalization efforts. Topics included Main Street Refresh, Main Street Summit, processes on creating a Main Street downtown revitalization program, board and volunteer development, encouraging and supporting local entrepreneurship, local resources for building rehabilitation and development, and fundraising. Majority of our workshops this year because of the pandemic was held virtually. 2689 individuals received downtown revitalization training with the Main Street Four-Point Approach and, served 231 total communities. Consulting services were conducted by staff upon request by communities seeking this type of revitalization training and mentoring. This start-up training includes continuous mentoring by our staff to the local board of directors in each case following the initial consultation. The start-up process includes an on-site analysis of the local needs and potential for revitalization success. Consulting and mentoring continued through 2020 with communities that began their revitalization programs as in previous years: these included follow-ups and continued training in 16 communities. The results show that most of these communities are progressing with projects that rehabilitate historic buildings and thus attract new business tenants that add value to the historic districts income-producing assets and increase local sales tax base and real estate values. These communities are proving their success by sending back reports periodically, which include economic data and preservation project results. Eight communities were ready in 2020 for advanced assistance to boost their success rate with revitalization projects and programs. In some cases, our staff provided the training and in other instances our staff recommended professional guidance in the form of architects, engineers and preservation consultants to provide the necessary skills for the project. These consulting and technical services are always customized to fit the need of the particular community requesting the service. Consulting visits and trainings were also provided to communities wanting to learn more about Main Street, these communities totaled 52. |
