ARTICHOKE IS A PLACE WHERE EVERYONE LISTENS TO MUSIC, ANYONE CAN LEARN TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT,ANYONE CAN EXPERIENCE PERFORMING MUSIC ON STAGE AND WHERE PEOPLE EXPERIENCE THE JOY OF PLAYING SONGS AND MUSIC TOGETHER. IT IS ALSO A PLACE THAT CAN CAPTURE THIS INSPIRING ACTIVITY IN DIGITAL FORMS AND SPREAD THAT INSPIRATION ACCROSS THE NATION. ACTIVITIES INCLUDE: WE PROVIDE A SPACE AND VARIED COMMUNITIES FOR ALL ARTISTS TO PRACTICE, DEVELOP, TEACH, PERFORM, COLLABORATE AND DIGITALLY CAPTURE THEIR ART. WE PROVIDE GROUPS, SUCH AS SOLDIER SONGS AND VOICES; A SOBER SONGWRITERS CIRCLE, AND REGIONAL MUSIC/CULTURE RELATED JOURNALISTS SPACE EVERY WEEK AT NO COST, TO CREATE IMPACT IN UNDERSERVED GROUPS AND TO SPREAD AUTHENTIC, POSITIVE STORIES ABOUT PORTLAND'S SUPPORTIVE MUSIC CULTURE. WE HOST AN OPEN MIC EVERY MONTH. THE PERFORMANCES ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AND PROVIDE PEOPLE AN ALL-AGES VENUE TO EXPLORE THEIR MUSIC IN A SAFE AND NURTURING ENVIRONMENT. WE SPONSOR AND UNDERWRITE A MONTHLY JAZZ JAM SESSION FOCUSING ON YOUNG PLAYERS FROM SECONDARY AND HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS, BRINGING THEM TOGETHER WITH THE AREA'S BEST MUSICIANS AND PREPARING THEM WITH PRACTICE DRILLS AND REPERTOIRE DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT. THIS PROGRAM IS ALSO IN THE PROCESS OF ENCOURAGING THE BEST YOUNG MUSICIANS TO SHARE WHAT THEY LEARN AT ARTICHOKE WITH THEIR PEERS, TO DEVELOP LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND TO INCORPORATE MUSIC INTO THEIR LIVES BEYOND MERELY GOING TO CLASS. WE PERIODICALLY CONVENE MUSICAL AND CULTURAL THOUGHT LEADERS IN PERSON AND IN ONLINE CONVERSATION FROM AROUND THE NATION TO INSPIRE COLLABORATION, LEARNING, BUSINESS SKILL DEVELOPMENT AND ENTERTAINMENT. WE PROVIDE GUITAR INSTRUCTION AND CURRICULUM ENHANCEMENT FOR K-12 STUDENTS INCLUDING AT RISK YOUTH AT LEARNING CENTERS SUCH AS YOUTHPROGRESS.ORG, SERVING YOUTH WHO ARE IN CARE AND CUSTODY OF THE OREGON YOUTH AUTHORITY (OYA) OR THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES (DHS).
