| FORM 990-EZ, PART III, LINE 28 | OUTLINE OF PROGRAMS RELATED TO SWW EDUCATION/OUTREACH AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT THANKS TO THE GENEROUS SUPPORT OF OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS, IN 2021 WE CONTINUED TO EXPAND OUR EDUCATION OFFERINGS IN SPITE OF THE ON-GOING PANDEMIC. WE ARE REACHING TO MARGINS OF OUR COMMUNITY TO TARGET THE MOST UNDERSERVED SECTORS, WHILE PROVIDING WORLD-CLASS ENTERTAINMENT, PROFESSIONAL TRAINING AND CURRICULUM SUPPORT TO ALL. WHILE SOME OF OUR COMMUNITY EVENTS AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS COULDN'T RUN FULLY IN 2021, WE CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT AND IMPROVEMENTS ON THEM AS WE ANTICIPATE THEIR RETURN IN 2022. SUMMER SOL 2021 THROUGH A COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP WITH THE WALLA WALLA PUBLIC SCHOOLS, SHAKESPEARE WALLA WALLA PROVIDED SUMMER CAMP SESSIONS TO WALLA WALLA AREA YOUTH. OVER AN EIGHT-WEEK PERIOD FROM JUNE 21ST - AUGUST 13TH, SWW INTRODUCED WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE TO STUDENTS FROM KINDERGARTEN THROUGH 8TH GRADE WHILE SHOWING THE BENEFITS OF THEATRE AND SORELY-NEEDED ARTS PROGRAMMING. WE COVERED DIFFICULT TOPICS LIKE BULLYING, THROUGH OUR TWO UNIQUE ANTI-BULLYING PROGRAMS. FROM ARTS AND CRAFTS, LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION, AND PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES; OUR WEEK-LONG SESSIONS ADDRESSED SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL NEEDS THROUGH CREATIVE OUTLETS. OUR THEATRE PROGRAMS ARE THE PERFECT MEDIUM TO MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT AND FACILITATE CONVERSATIONS ON SENSITIVE SUBJECTS BY ALLOWING STUDENTS TO OBSERVE HUMAN BEHAVIOR AND TO FEEL EMPATHY FOR A RANGE OF CHARACTERS. AT THE END OF EACH WEEK, STUDENTS WERE PROUD TO TAKE HOME THEIR THEATRE CRAFTS AND NEWFOUND KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE RENAISSANCE PERIOD. MANY STUDENTS WERE ABLE TO TAKE IN THEIR FIRST LIVE PERFORMANCE THROUGH OUR SUMMER PROGRAMS. ANTI-BULLYING DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION BUILDING PROGRAMS ARE AVAILABLE FOR BOTH ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS. AFTER A PUPPET SHOW PERFORMANCE WITH FAMILIAR DR. SEUSS CHARACTERS, ELEMENTARY STUDENTS BREAK OFF INTO SMALLER GROUPS TO LEARN ABOUT ACCEPTANCE AND RESPECT IN WORKSHOPS LED BY OUR TEACHING ARTISTS. IN MIDDLE SCHOOLS, A SIMILAR PROGRAM IS PROVIDED, WHERE STUDENTS WATCH FAST-PACED VERSION OF SHAKESPEARE'S TWELFTH NIGHT. AFTER THE LIVE PERFORMANCE, OUR TEACHING ARTISTS DISCUSS BULLYING AND CYBER BULLYING WITH STUDENTS AND FACILITATE DISCUSSION ON HOW EVERYONE CAN PLAY AN ACTIVE PART IN ENCOURAGING INCLUSION IN ALL OUR SCHOOLS. THIS YEAR WE OFFERED THIS PROGRAM TO GARRISON MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS DURING SUMMER SOL. OUR TEACHING ARTISTS BEGAN BY PRESENTING A 50-MINUTE VERSION OF TWELFTH NIGHT. BY FOLLOWING THE PATHS OF SHAKESPEARE'S CHARACTERS, STUDENTS DISCOVER HOW EACH CHARACTER'S BEHAVIOR IMPACTS THE STORY. THIS PLAY AND THE WORKSHOPS THAT SUPPORT IT OPEN DIALOGUE ABOUT THE SCHOOLS' CLIMATES, AND WHAT EACH PERSON CAN DO TO MAKE THEIR SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT SAFER AND HEALTHIER. IN SCHOOL RESIDENCIES OUR MULTI-DAY "LIVING WITH SHAKESPEARE" RESIDENCY FOR HIGH SCHOOL FRESHMEN ENRICHES THE EXPERIENCE OF THE STATE-MANDATED ELA CURRICULUM OF "ROMEO AND JULIET." WE EXAMINE THE RHYTHM, METER, AND TEMPO OF SHAKESPEARE'S WRITING BY GIVING STUDENTS THE CHANCE TO SPEAK HIS WORDS. STUDENTS WILL LEARN ELIZABETHAN DANCES, PLAY GAMES TO DISCOVER THE BASICS OF STAGING, AND PERFORM A SCENE FROM A FAMOUS PLAY, COMPLETE WITH STATE COMBAT. WE HAVE WORKED THIS YEAR TO ENHANCE THIS PROGRAM TO INCLUDE A SUPPORTIVE AND MEANINGFUL CONVERSATION ON SUICIDE PREVENTION. WITH THE HELP OF MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS, LOCAL CRISIS GROUPS, WE ANTICIPATE FINISHING THESE UPDATES IN EARLY 2021. DIA DE LOS MUERTOS FESTIVAL THE DIA DE LOS MUERTOS FESTIVAL IS A COLLABORATION BETWEEN MANY LOCAL BUSINESSES AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS AND IS INSPIRED BY THE "DAY OF THE DEAD" HOLIDAY WHERE PEOPLE THROUGHOUT LATIN AMERICA GATHER TO CELEBRATE THE LIVES OF DEPARTED FRIENDS AND FAMILY. FREE ACTIVITIES INCLUDE FACE-PAINTING, A SHAKESPEAREAN-THEMED "PAGEANT OF THE DEAD" PERFORMED BY LOCAL STUDENT GROUPS, MUSIC, DANCE PERFORMANCES AND MORE. COMMUNITY ALTARS (OFRENDAS) ALSO ARE ON DISPLAY. SUMMER SHAKESPEARE PRODUCTION OUR LONG-TERM GOAL IS TO BUILD A WEEK-LONG SUMMER THEATER FESTIVAL IN WALLA WALLA. WE HAVE PROVIDED THREE SUMMERS OF LIVE SHAKESPEAREAN PERFORMANCES AT WHITMAN COLLEGE AMPHITHEATRE. THIS EVENT IS POPULAR IN THE COMMUNITY AND HAS FEATURED BOTH LOCAL ACTORS, AS WELL AS BRINGING IN ACTORS' TROUPES FROM OUTSIDE OF WALLA WALLA. FOR OUR FOURTH YEAR WE ARE PREPARING TO FEATURE LOCAL ACTORS AND A LOCAL DIRECTOR. FROM OUR SIGNATURE INTENSIVE "LIVING WITH SHAKESPEARE" PROGRAM WHICH BRINGS SHAKESPEARE ALIVE IN THE CLASSROOM, TO ANTI-BULLYING WORKSHOPS TO OUR SUMMER THEATER CAMPS, WE ARE ALWAYS STRIVING TO ENRICH THE MINDS OF OUR LOCAL STUDENT POPULATIONS. |
