AS A DIRECT RESULT OF OUR MEDICAL CAPABILITIES, REPUTATION FOR QUALITY CARE AND TRACK RECORD OF PROVIDING HIGH-LEVEL SERVICES ACROSS THE SOUTHERN TIER, UHS HOSPITALS (AFFILIATED HOSPITAL) WAS SELECTED BY NEW YORK STATE TO SERVE THE IMPORTANT ROLE OF REGIONAL COVID-19 VACCINATION HUB. GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS ESTABLISHED 10 HUBS ACROSS THE STATE, EACH LED BY A HOSPITAL SYSTEM, RESPONSIBLE FOR COORDINATING VACCINE DISTRIBUTION. THE STATE CHOSE UHS AS THE LEADER OF THE SOUTHERN TIER REGIONAL VACCINATION HUB, AN AREA MADE UP OF BROOME, CHEMUNG, CHENANGO, DELAWARE, SCHUYLER, STEUBEN, TIOGA AND TOMPKINS COUNTIES. WITHIN THE FIRST FEW MONTHS, UHS' SOUTHERN TIER HUB ACHIEVED A MILESTONE BY ADMINISTERING MORE THAN 250,000 FIRST DOSES OF THE VACCINE. ALL HUB-RELATED ACTIVITIES IN THE REGION WERE LED BY UHS WITH NO COMPENSATION FROM THE STATE. EVEN AT A TIME WHEN OUR FINANCES WERE STRETCHED TO THE LIMIT, WE NEVER CURTAILED OUR LEADERSHIP OR PARTICIPATION IN THE HUB ENDEAVOR. MAINTAINING PARTNERSHIPS WITH A WIDE RANGE OF COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, GROUPS, BUSINESSES AND AGENCIES TO ENSURE ACCESS TO CARE AND IMPROVE THE HEALTH STATUS OF GREATER BINGHAMTON IS A KEY PRIORITY OF UHS AND UMA. DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, UHS AND UMA PLAYED A MAJOR ROLE IN PROVIDING CARE TO CORONAVIRUS PATIENTS, SUCH AS CONDUCTING TENS OF THOUSANDS OF COVID TESTS IN BROOME, CHENANGO AND DELAWARE COUNTIES. AS THE PANDEMIC SURGED, STAFF AND PROVIDERS CREATED MORE THAN 200 NEGATIVE-PRESSURE HOSPITAL ROOMS, FEATURING DOUBLE-FILTERED FRESH AIR, ACROSS GREATER BINGHAMTON TO CARE EXCLUSIVELY FOR COVID PATIENTS. LED BY UMA PROVIDERS, TELEHEALTH WAS EXPANDED FOR THOSE PATIENTS WHO COULD NOT, OR WERE RELUCTANT TO, SEEK CARE AT A PHYSICAL LOCATION. THE VALUE SERVICES PROVIDED TO THE COMMUNITY CAN BE CATALOGUED AS FOLLOWS: (1) UMA PROVIDERS ARE VERY MUCH INVOLVED IN MEDICAL AND PHARMACEUTICAL RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, WHICH ENHANCE THE FIELD OF KNOWLEDGE IN MEDICAL DISCIPLINES. THESE PROGRAMS ARE ALSO ABLE TO OFFER CARE TO PATIENTS WHO MAY BE UNABLE TO RECEIVE CARE UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES. THIS RESEARCH ALSO HELPS PHYSICIANS TO KEEP UP TO DATE WITH NEW DEVELOPMENTS WITHIN THEIR DISCIPLINES AND OFFERS INCREASED OPPORTUNITIES FOR CROSS-EDUCATION ACTIVITIES FOR THEM. (2) UMA PROVIDERS STAFF COMMUNITY BENEFIT PROGRAMS IN THE FORM OF EDUCATING STUDENT INTERNS FROM BROOME COMMUNITY COLLEGE, OTHER LOCAL TEACHING INSTITUTIONS AND THE ALBANY COLLEGE OF PHARMACY.
