| Form 990, Part III, Line 4a | The mission of SCHS is to extend the healing ministry of Jesus by providing quality health care and related services to the individual's families and communities they serve. SCHS is the sole member of two licensed acute care hospitals: St. Vincent Charity Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio and Mercy Medical Center in Canton, Ohio. Ownership of Mercy Medical Center was transferred to the Cleveland Clinic as of February 1, 2021. SCHS is the sole member of two elder care facilities: Regina Health Center (RHC) and Light of Hearts Villa (LOHV). RHC is a skilled nursing and assisted living facility established to serve aging vowed religious men and women in the Diocese of Cleveland and Youngstown. LOHV is an assisted/independent living facility which also provides respite and memory care. SCHS is the sole member of three grant making foundations in Ohio and South Carolina. Each foundation endeavors to understand the root cause of poverty, nurture the growth of healthy communities, emphasize youth and family, and measure the outcomes of these efforts. Based on the needs of the communities they serve, the foundations strategic initiatives focus on low income housing, early childhood education, fatherhood in the family, homelessness and religious communities. Collectively, the foundations awarded over 250 grants totaling over $7.7 million in 2021. Other health and human services and education-related organizations within SCHS include: Joseph's Home, a residential care center providing medical respite to homeless men in Cleveland; Early Childhood Resource Center, which provides resources and training for people working with children in Canton, Ohio; Healthy Learners, a state-wide organization providing health care resources for children in low income families across South Carolina; and South Carolina Center for Fathers and Families, a state-wide organization supporting initiatives to re-engage fathers in the lives of their children. Overall, in 2021 inspired by a devotion to healing and a steadfast and deep commitment to our communities, SCHS and its family of ministries provided over $24 million in community benefits. This number includes $15 million in charity care and unpaid costs of Medicaid and $9 million in other community health services, including health professional education, community building activities and medically disadvantaged members of the community based on the Catholic Health Association model. |
