| ORGANIZATION'S MISSION AND SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITIES | FORM 990, PART III, LINE 1 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION SALT LAKE FILM SOCIETY'S MISSION IS TO EDUCATE, ADVOCATE, AND INFORM ABOUT AND THROUGH CINEMA. PROMOTE DIVERSITY THROUGH FILM EXHIBITION AND CREATION. FOSTER FILM TALENT AND CULTIVATE FILM APPRECIATION AND PARTICIPATION. THE PROGRAMS AND VENUES ENSURE THAT THE POTENT IDEAS AND VOICES OF FILM ARE ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE IN OUR COMMUNITY. FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4 - PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS Despite the pandemic, Salt Lake Film Society (SLFS) has continued its mission to educate, advocate, and inform through cinema and continues to focus its time and resources on the services it can provide despite the challenges faced today. SLFS fosters local film talent and strengthens film appreciation and participation through programs and venues that ensure that the potent ideas and voices in film represent and include diverse voices and perspectives and are accessible to everyone in the community. During 2021, SLFS continued to see growth and expansion of the cultural film tours program. The film tours attracted 11 minority partner organizations and 28 volunteers from underserved communities. SLFS increased the number of films presented, hosted six virtual and in-person opening and closing night festivities, and created 19 filmmaker panel discussion videos, including four that were presented as part of the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. Each of the virtual film tours, L'Chaim and Masima had over 1,000 views, while Filmexico, which was offered as a hybrid program shortly after the Broadway reopened in October of 2021, had a sold-out opening night. In 2021, SLFS experienced continued success with two other programs created in response to COVID shutdowns; SLFSathome and Studio Backlot Motor Cinema. SLFSathome creates a virtual theatrical experience online, while Studio Backlot Motor Cinema is an outdoor cinema. This semi-permanent outdoor theater creates a drive-in experience which ran for several weeks in spring and summer of 2021. This program featured repertory titles, feel-good classics and films made by Utah filmmakers. These evenings featured special guests, community emcees, entertainers and fresh-made concessions. This popular event, which often sold out, provided much needed fun and levity in the way that only communal arts experiences can. SLFS has continued its commitment to service underserved populations in 2021. SLFS reaches economically underserved populations with free, low and discounted ticket prices, offering matinee discount prices, student and senior discounts, and affordable concessions. A robust volunteer program offers movie vouchers for seniors, students, and those on a fixed income. Service to the differently abled is provided though ADA compliant seating and other access requirements. Weekly open captioned screenings, plentiful assistive listening devices, closed caption devices, and audio narration are always available. Sign language is being added to a growing number of special events, and once full venue operation resumes, the organization plans to increase screenings for those in the autism community. Through all of these services SLFS strives to enlighten the entire community, especially engaging underrepresented groups who may not have access to films that represent their culture, language or traditions. SLFS film programs are curated to not only engage and entertain but to raise awareness, create conversation and help people find meaningful connections to others. |
