| Form 990, Part I, Line 6, Volunteers: | The Organization utilizes volunteers to organize and operate all areas of the Chorus. During fiscal year 2022 approximately 170 chorus singers and chorus management volunteers donated their time and talents to the Organization. |
| Form 990, Part III, Line 1, Organization's Mission: | Mission: The mission of The Washington Chorus is to preserve and advance the art of choral singing and share the experience of the transforming power of choral music. TWC does this by performing at the highest artistic level in the nation's capital and before diverse national and international audiences, and by nurturing the next generation of choral singers. Core Values: Excellence: Perform choral music at the highest levels of excellence and artistry with our musical partners and for our audiences Inclusion: Promote diversity, inclusion, access, and equity in the Washington Chorus and across the choral community Community: Foster an environment of cohesiveness, joy and respect within our choral community of singers, board members and staff. Serve and engage with our regional and broader communities by singing and learning together, and sharing our collective passion for choral music. Collaboration: Partner, engage and work closely with our stakeholders and donors to further our mutual appreciation and support for the musical arts. Innovation: Explore and embrace new frontiers across the broad musical expanse. Harness our collective strengths and resilience to overcome challenges with integrity and humility. |
| Form 990, Part III, Line 4a: Concert Series, Education and Community | Outreach Programs: (continued) Not only did the Chorus return, but we presented 7 of our trademark Candlelight Christmas shows: more than any other year in our organization's 61-year history (the Chorus previously presented 3-5 Candlelight Christmas shows in a given year). This year also marked the 30th anniversary of our engaging high school SIDE BY SIDE program, where The Washington Chorus shares the stage with the next generation of choral singers. Each year, the Side by Side program selects up to two outstanding local high school choruses to partner with The Washington Chorus for the unique experience of rehearsing and performing alongside a world-class symphonic chorus on the Kennedy Center and Strathmore Concert Hall stages. During the Candlelight Christmas concerts, the high schools perform their own set of music as well as sing within full chorus. This year the schools chosen were the Reservoir High School High School Chamber Choir under the direction of Gregory Knauf, and the Duke Ellington School of the Arts Concert Choir under the direction of Reginald Golden. 45 students from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts and 24 students from the Reservoir High School participated. TWC continued its newest digital platform, CAUSE FOR SONG, offering patrons a way to send videos of personalized dedications and songs to loved ones. TWC uses this as a modest additional revenue stream, but also uses it to support its professional artists, who receive a 50% split of the proceeds for their video recordings. In celebration of Black History Month, and in recognition of our continued commitment and work in promoting our values of excellence, community, inclusion, collaboration, and innovation, TWC restreamed its emotionally stirring digital performance of its June 2021 RESILIENCE concert, which features music by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Margaret Bonds, and Rollo Dilworth, and performances by The Washington Chorus with richly talented guest voice and instrumental soloists, including pianist Lara Downes. Using a "pay what you will" model (including free), we were able to reach a diverse audience. The Washington Chorus joined the National Philharmonic in March 2022 to perform with the National Philharmonic Chorale on the new commission by composer Adolphus Hailstork: "AMERICA'S REQUIEM: KNEE ON THE NECK," a tribute to George Floyd. The premier performance was held and recorded at the Music Center at Strathmore, with an additional appearance at the new Capital One Hall in Tysons, Virginia. The DC HONOR ENSEMBLES, a choral and instrumental festival in partnership with DC Public Schools, serves elementary, middle, and high school aged students throughout all eight wards of Washington, DC. Students participate in intensive rehearsals and perform a free and open-to-the-public culminating performance. The Chorus worked with 75 DCPS middle school students at The ARC of DC, in partnership with the Children's Chorus of Washington who served additional students in grades 4 and 5. The Chorus' JUSTICE AND PEACE concert was presented at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall on June 12, 2022, featuring "Justice Symphony" by Damien Geter, a piece that is centered around anthems from the Civil Rights era. TWC previously commissioned Damien Geter for the short music film, "Cantata for a More Hopeful Tomorrow," to great acclaim. |
