Explanation:
We were late filing our 2021 990ez filings for the following reason. We went through a series of changes concerning our filings. Our organization had to close down from the start due to the Covid shutdown in 2020. Our organization had to swiftly transition to working from home, which we were unprepared for. Our staff at the time was composed of AARP Volunteers & besides the Exec. Director, 1 staff member who was over the age of 60. With the effects of Covid, our volunteers were not allowed to come back for over a year, in fact, August of 2021, due to what was still deemed a Covid environment. One staff member did not want to see anyone for the same reason. We are HUD Approved Housing. Our organization's nature is to help families that are distressed financially related to housing. We were overwhelmed when Covid affected our state, and the shutdown happened. The only one in the office was the Executive Director & she had to handle every call and client, and there were too many to count, and she was struggling to keep our doors open. Our Treasurer, who handled all of our finances then, and her family was stricken with Covid. She had underlying conditions that kept her from getting us our financials. She was the only one that had access to them. With her going through what she was going through being sick, and our trying to adjust to the dramatic consequences Covid had affected our organization was detrimental. The state courts sent every delinquent renter to us, and the Servicers sent every delinquent homeowner. This, in fact, is still happening right now today in organizations. Never in the history of our organization had we had this influx of rental clients and families needing assistance. Just as our state had to get into a position to assist these families, we had to also because they were sending a tremendous amount of them to us. And it was not realized. It was not until we received a letter about missing schedule B for 2020 filings that we realized they had not been filed. Our funding from HUD had been delayed, and again our focus was keeping the doors open. When we realized we had not filed them, we stopped everything to get them done and sent them in. We just had the 2021 filings we filed returned last week; it said they had to be electronically filed. Something that we were unaware of as well. When we received the letter, we went online to get an understanding, and it was on the IRS website that the 2021 filings could be sent in paper form for that year. It took us a while to find and figure out how to file electronically. The information is not really clear on the IRS website. I called and called the number on the letter, and there was never anyone to answer the call to give any information. We experience the same thing while trying to understand and ask questions about the 2020 filings. This was not intentional but an unfortunate and actual occurrence. We are asking you to please have mercy on our organization and waive any penalties that would've been assessed. We can say that we won't be found in this position again. We moved our books online. We hired an accountant and have one on our board to keep us mindful of our filings and to have access to our financial records at all times. We hope and pray that no one will get sick to that degree again in our organization and that we never are hit with a pandemic again. We were just trying to help our community, with no intent to do wrong or to overlook this important piece to our maintaining our Non-Profit Exempt Status. Please don't penalize us this time. We will not be found here again. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
