Explanation:

Our accountant who filed our 990 returns in the past years retired after filing our 2020 return. We hired a new accountant to file our 2021 return. The accountant became ill prior to filing our return and filed our return after the due date. When he filed the return he was unaware that the return needed to be electronically filed and he sent the return by mail. We received a letter today February 21, 2023 with our return enclosed. We are Volunteer Firefighters and our Fire Company has always filed our 990 returns on time. We are 100% volunteer and use our funds to purchase our Fire Apparatus and firefighting equipment to protect the citizens of our Township. We receive minimal support from our municipality. We are now trying to file our return electronically by ourselves since we are not able to get in touch with the accountant after receiving the notice from the internal revenue service. In the future we will not be using the accountant that we used to prepared our 990 return for the 2021 tax year. We have reached out to a CPA firm that will be filing our future returns. Please note that this return is being electronically filed by members of our fire company due to as previously mentioned we cannot get in touch with the accountant who prepared the return to avoid any penalty. We hope you will consider not accessing a penalty for the late filing. We thank you.
