(Required for section 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations; optional for others.)
What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? The organization works to improve the music education students receive in the Pacific Northwest, and around the globe, by supporting and educating music educators in the Orff Schulwerk approach. We provide training to teachers through workshops and summer intensives, and offer scholarships and incentives to support inexperienced and/or historically marginalized teachers as they pursue professional training.
Describe the organization’s program service accomplishments for each of its three largest program services, as measured by expenses. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 The summer intensive courses, called Orff Levels, ran from July 25th 2022 to August 5th 2022. The goal of this course is to give teachers new to Orff Schulwerk in depth knowledge and skills that they can take back to their schools or educational environments. During this course, the teachers cycled between 3 different classes to support their professional growth: Orff Pedagogy, Creative Movement, and Recorder, each lead by an AOSA-approved instructor. There were 3 pedagogy instructors, one for each level of certification, plus 1 movement instructor and 1 recorder instructor who taught all 3 levels. By the end of the course, 33 teachers attained a Level 1 certification through AOSA, 22 teachers attained a Level 2 certification through AOSA, and 10 teachers attained a Level 3 certification through AOSA. The 10 teachers who attained the Level 3 certification are now considered fully certified Orff-Schulwerk educators by the American Orff-Schulwerk Association. Expenses below are estimates. Because the course operates annually during the summer, some of the income and expenses are reflected in a previous tax year as participants register and as the course directors secure facilities to rent and housing for the instructors. For this course in the summer of 2022, most of the expenses are reflected below, but it is not an exhaustive list because some of the expenses happened in the previous tax year of 2021.

29 During the school year, the organization held 4 workshops for teachers to attend and grow professionally. The workshop held on August 6th workshop featured Maria Vanessa Utz who taught participants songs and games from Paraguay and Latin America to add to our curricula. The workshop on October 15th featured Andrew Ellingsen who provided examples and inspiration to use play as the primary method of learning for our youngest students. The workshop on April 23rd featured Judith Thompson-Barthwell who helped participants learn about ways to scaffold and layer creative movement into our music classrooms sequentially. Our final workshop of the year on May 6th was a collaboration between Portland State University and the local Kodaly chapter (Southern Washington and Oregon Kodaly Educators). This workshop was a free event, targeting college students and newer teachers to provide them with context and a deeper understanding of what both Kodaly and Orff trainings can offer them as they start their careers. Across all 4 workshops, we received 131 registrations. The first 3 workshop expenses were only paying facility rentals, instructor honorariums, and instructor reimbusesments for flights, hotel, and some food. The last workshop had zero expenses. The university did not charge us for facility usage, and our board members donated their time to lead the workshop, so required no compensation.

30 As a part of the organization's mission to support teachers in their professional growth, we fund scholarships for teachers who are new to Orff Schulwerk, and for teachers from historically marginalized groups to encourage the diversity of the music educators in our region. In 2022, the chapter funded 6 scholarships to help teachers attend the Summer 2022 Levels Course. 3 teachers applied and were granted $300 scholarships to help them participant in their first Orff course in Level 1. 3 teachers applied and were a granted a $200 diversity-incentive scholarship aimed to help increase the diversity of music educators in our area. All 6 scholarship recipients completed their levels courses in the Summer of 2022. It must be noted however, that the funds of these 6 scholarships given for the 2022 Levels Course were sent out during the previous tax year (approximately May 2022). They are not reflected in this tax form, nor below, even though the Levels Course itself was held in this tax year. The scholarships that are reflected in this current tax year as expenses were for the 2023 Levels Course. The expenses for the 2023 Levels Course itself will be reflected in the next tax form for July 2023-June 2024. The total number of scholarships given out for the 2023 course were 11. Because of the health of the Levels checking account, we decided we were able to be more generous with our scholarships. We gave out 7 scholarships for teachers new to Orff, each totaling $300. We also gave out 4 scholarships for teachers of color, each totaling $200. All 11 teachers successfully completed the courses this past summer, with 1 of them completing their Level 3 certification and becoming fully and officially Orff-certified by AOSA.

Return Reference Explanation
Schedule A, Part III, Line 1 POSA did not have to provide detailed financial records for previous 990-N (e-postcard) fillings, and the treasurer at the time did not keep detailed records. The income listed for fiscal years 2020 and before are the total, gross deposits received from all workshops, levels, and memberships during that fiscal year according to the records in our bank. The deposits were not labelled, organized, or separated, so I cannot determine which deposits were for which service or membership. The numbers show the total amount we received for income, but might not be accurate per each category in Part III.

Form 990-EZ, Part I, Line 20 We had extra funds saved from the previous year and we were receiving a large number of participant fees for the 2023 Levels Course. Under advisement of an accountant and our parent organization AOSA we deposited $30,000 into an investment account with UBS on June 27th, 2023. By the end of this fiscal year (3 days later) no interest had been accrued. The future interest generated by this investment account will be used in future tax years towards workshop costs so we can lower costs for workshop participants, and/or to fund more scholarships for new educators or educators of color. The board will look at the amount made in interest and vote on a course of action, once we see how many funds are available. Either way, this account furthers our goals by providing support to teachers who want further professional training in the Orff Schulwerk approach.
