| ORGANIZATION'S MISSION AND SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITIES | FORM 990, PART III, LINE 1 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION SALT LAKE FILM SOCIETY'S MISSION IS TO EDUCATE, ADVOCATE, AND INFORM ABOUT AND THROUGH CINEMA. PROMOTE DIVERSITY THROUGH FILM EXHIBITION AND CREATION. FOSTER FILM TALENT AND CULTIVATE FILM APPRECIATION AND PARTICIPATION. THE PROGRAMS AND VENUES ENSURE THAT THE POTENT IDEAS AND VOICES OF FILM ARE ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE IN OUR COMMUNITY. FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4 - PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS For over 20 years Salt Lake Film Society (SLFS) has operated the largest independent, mission driven, non-profit, venue- based film organization serving residents in Utah every day of the year. SLFS operates two locations: Broadway Centre Cinemas in downtown SLC and the historic Tower Theatre in the 9th and 9th neighborhood. SLFS presents quality independent, international, local, documentary and repertory film titles on a total of seven screens. SLFS exhibits a curated and diverse selection of films and related cultural events that fulfill its mission to exhibit, create and preserve the big screen cinema experience. SLFS fosters local film talent and strengthens film appreciation and participation. SLFS programs and venues ensure that the potent ideas and voices in film are accessible to everyone in our community. SLFS' films, cultural tours and repertory programs represent a high level of artistic merit, and its physical venues are popular, communal, gathering places that the public attend and support. All SLFS films, programs and events are carefully curated based on four core values: community need, artistic merit, festival and award history, and critical acclaim. 1. Community need: programmers consider changes in demographics and relevant local and global issues. 2. Artistic merit: programmers are experts with a combined 50 years in the business. They watch hundreds of films each year to identify the best. 3. Festival and Award History: films are tracked throughout the festival cycle and identified. 4. Critical Acclaim: networking with art house peers and seasoned film critics helps verify top choices. SLFS' exclusive, compelling, and high-quality films and one-of-a-kind cultural and education programs provide a timeless, immersive and positively life altering experience of shared public storytelling through film. It is the SLFS mission to meet and exceed the community's need for the theatrical film experience with the best films available. In 2022, SLFS' regular and special event film programming offered 358 quality, independent, international, documentary, local, classic, and repertory films, special events and online titles. This included 277 film titles, 54 special events and 51 online films. SLFS was one of the few cinemas in the state where audiences could see 116 international films, 82 repertory, classic or cult titles, 67 documentaries, and 65 American Independent films. Of the 277 films exhibited, two-thirds garnered critical acclaim and won major awards. Filmgoing is among the most modern, popular, and accessible art forms in our culture, and with the thoughtful curation, educational events, and numerous guest speakers and artists involved, SLFS elevates the cinema experience even more. SLFS provides a welcoming gathering place in which people can participate in meaningful conversations, gain insight into different points of view, and learn from each other. As a 2022 SLFS patron survey shows, 87% of SLFS patrons said that "SLFS is a community anchor and sparks art and culture." SLFS is one of only a few hundred independent, nonprofit art house cinemas still in operation in the US. SLFS is an indispensable resource for film, it is well loved and passionately supported by a community of loyal patrons, cinephiles, and a growing younger audience all of whom entrust SLFS to curate films which cannot be found anywhere else. SLFS film programming matters to many, 86% of SLFS patrons say "SLFS elevates the experience of being in this community." Unlike mainstream, commercial theaters, SLFS is mission-driven and service oriented, presenting the most important must- see films. SLFS exists to keep film made for the big screen seen on the big screen, in a communal, safe, and public space which only an art house theater can provide. |
