    3 The income earned from the Association's MMA account helps the Association in its goal of providing scholarships. The interest bearing account provides the liquidity the Association needs for maintaining inventory levels and engaging the alumni throughout the year while also making use of the fact that the largest expense of the scholarships takes place at one point in the year.
    4 The income earned from the Association's investment account moves the Association closer to its goal of having a substantial endowment from which it can guarantee scholarships to each class of graduating seniors. Having this endowment is critical to helping weather years where the Association draws in less fundraising from the community; COVID was a strong example of the need for this fund since there were no in-person events for several years which are the basis for most of the Association's fundraising.

    We filed an extension for our 2020 return due to a change in the board makeup and a new treasurer coming in which also coincided with the requirement for electronic filing. After working through the new filing requirement and submitting our 2020 return it was rejected by the system. The system-issued rejection note was somewhat vague and no additional letters or instructions were sent. Repeated attempts throughout 2021 to call the IRS exempt help line resulted in an inability to connect with a representative; after going through the menu an automated message said lines were busy and there was not even an option to be put on hold the system would then just disconnect at that point. It seemed problematic especially with the new electronic filing system to file a return when the prior return had not yet been received in the system. We therefore request that penalties are not assessed on this return.
