In 2022 we started the process of re-instating our tax-exempt status after losing it under previous leadership when they failed to file several years in a row. When the new leadership took over regaining our tax status was a top priority. After submitting all our paperwork in December 2022, we waited for a response on our status. On August 2, 2023, we received a letter requesting additional information about our reinstatement, which we returned promptly. During this time, we gathered our 990 to submit for 2022, but we were unable to submit electronically because we did not have a tax-exempt EIN, so we attempted to paper file, sending our returns to the IRS on August 21, 2023. On September 21, 2023, we received notice that our tax-exempt status had been reinstated. On November 20, 2023, we received a letter from the IRS rejecting our 990-tax return, because our EIN was not tax exempt. On November 21, 2023, Mr. Rye called the IRS Tax exempt support line, and was advised by Mrs. Stephenson that a paper filing would not be accepted for our organization and to file again electronically while writing a Statement of Reasonable Cause to request late fees to be waived. This filing was made on November 22, 2023, and was rejected by the IRS on November 22, 2023, because the EIN number was not in the exempt organization database. Mr. Rye attempted to call the IRS on November 27, delayed by several days due to the Thanksgiving Holiday, and was unable to get hold of a representative. Mr. Rye called again on November 28 and was again unable to get ahold of a representative. Me. Rye called again on November 29 and was able to contact a representative. The representative (ID: 1001352209) advised Mr. Rye that the EIN would need to be updated into the database, and worked on putting that request in. The representative advised Mr. Rye to wait two weeks and call the IRS again to ensure that the database had been updated before filing again. On December 13, 2023, Mr. Rye called the IRS again and was advised by representative (ID: 1002882366) that the organization was in the tax-exempt organization and that filing electronically now would work. The organization humbly requests the IRS to waive any late fees for us.
