Explanation:
We request a first-time abatement of the late filing penalty. In the wake of the Covid-19 Pandemic, the organization experienced a significant change in its operations when their long-time accountant passed away at the age of 95. Additionally, the Quartermaster responsible for the organization's financial affairs retired. As a result, the incoming Quartermaster did not realize that the filing deadline for the Organization's 2021 Form 990EZ was November 15, 2022. Upon realizing that the organization missed the filing deadline, the Quartermaster promptly obtained the services of a new accountant to compile the information necessary to file this return. This organization was created for the benefit of Veterans of Foreign Wars in the Newtown, Connecticut area. There is no profit motive involved, this is truly a volunteer not-for-profit organization. The current volunteer Board is keenly aware of its requirements to be in compliance with the IRS and it is their earnest intent to be compliant. It seems onerous to assess a late filing penalty. Therefore, we are asking for an first-time abatement of the late filing penalty.
