The purpose is to address the opioid epidemic, encompassing all six pillars necessary for such a coordinated response prevention, treatment, recovery, law enforcement, criminal justice reform, and overdose reversal. SAFE is using this grant money to promote youth leadership in prevention and reduction of opioid and prescription drug misuse projects. This past year, youth have been actively engaged in two main prevention strategies. The first strategy was to target the 6th grade population through an interactive digital presentation about the health, social and legal consequences of substance use. There were 12 presentations this past year, reaching approximately 2,800 sixth graders. The second strategy engaged the high school population in creating a 30 second video public service announcement (PSA) about opioid abuse and misuse. The SAFE Opioid Heroin Prevention Task Force chose 3 video PSAs out of contest submissions that were aired through social media platforms and streaming services. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 7: SAFE Tobacco and Nicotine Task Force TNT meetings were held. Provided presentations to parents, families, principals, other school professionals, child safety officers, community partners, youth and parents. SAFE continued planning strategies to reach immigrant communities with opioid misuse prevention messaging. The strategies included dissemination of the Dont Be an Accidental Drug Dealer rack card into Spanish and Vietnamese for diverse audiences as well as working with the SAFE Latino Coalition Coordinator to increase opioid prevention education within the Latino community in our county. SAFE partnered with Chesterfield County Mental Health Prevention Services again to run the youth created peer to peer opioid prevention messaging on a variety of media platforms, including OTT/video, cable and social media, throughout Chesterfield County to increase awareness on opioid abuse and the dangers of opioids becoming a gateway to heroin.
