Explanation:
The ALTSpace community workshop has existed in one form or another since 2011 and I have been a member since 2014, making art and helping to maintain the space as I've been able. (The space has always operated primarily on the cooperative volunteer effort of the membership). In 2018 the space was taken over by a local 501c(3) non profit (Ignition Northwest) who were interested in running a maker space and having a central location to use as their headquarters. At that time I volunteered to help Ignition Northwest manage the space for a small stipend of $400/month. I was primarily responsible for giving tours, signing up and onboarding new members, and maintaining the physical space and equipment. In early 2020 with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic Ignition Northwest decided they wanted to divest themselves of the flailing (and at that time indefinitely closed) maker space. At a meeting of the membership we took a vote and decided to try to save the space as an independent entity. We had enough members commit to maintaining their member dues through the closure that we could afford to service the rent so we decided to go for it. We had to quickly set up a new organization to take over the rental obligation and we needed a business bank account, insurance, etc to meet the landlord's commercial tenant requirements. Due to my position as space manager a lot of this transition fell on me to figure out and since I have never started or run any kind of organization before I found the experience very overwhelming and a lot of stuff was going over my head. Between trying to keep ALTSpace viable and other stresses resulting from the pandemic--including moving 40 minutes out of town into a travel trailer with my partner and our two small children--I experienced multiple full-blown psychotic breaks and spent several weeks in 2021 on involuntary hold in mental health facilities. By the end of 2021, ALTSpace's landlord had been renovating the building and indicated that he needed us out as soon as possible. I was expecting we'd fold the place up and I'd file whatever forms I needed to close out the whole endeavor. However, much to my surprise, the membership was extremely committed and with very little help from me found us a new place, moved our decade+ of collected tools, materials, and junk, and built out the new space into a fantastic and functional reincarnation of the space. Now we have assembled a board that is effective and motivated to keep the space going and I am attempting to pass the torch, but I realized that I have made a mess of this aspect of it and I am trying to get this stuff filed properly so no one else has to clean up my mess. I don't know if this counts as a "reasonable cause" for filing late, but I take full responsibility for dropping the ball on this one and I apologize for not doing better. -Noah Tippett
