| Other | Pt. III, line 4a - STATEMENT OF PROGRAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS - OVERVIEW: We provided funding for programs in education, healthcare, housing, and support services for 120 underprivileged children ranging from preschool age through university level in the Kathmandu Valley. We provided oversight and program coordination for our programs in partnership with our major NGO partner in Nepal, Bhuwaneshwori Satyal Foundation (BSF). In Nepal, our children finished the school year and advanced to higher grades. Further, we had five graduates who obtained jobs and became independent of Mitrata support. They obtained bachelor's degrees in accounting, management, and social work, and two are Doctors of Medicine. The Executive Director and Board President of BSF attended and participated in the all-day strategic planning process and met with staff and sponsors in multiple meetings over a 2-week period in the USA. Additional accomplishments are: (1)Successfully re-established all programs that were negatively impacted by the pandemic; (2)Supplied cell phones and laptops to children; (3)Graduated five Contact Center children to continued education in private schools; (4)Celebrated all 10th graders passing the Secondary Education Examination (SEE)to enter 11th grade, continuing our success rate of 99%; (5)Hosted Virtual Trivia Night and Miles for Mitrata Kids fundraisers; (6) Effectively completed set up of the new Contact Center and office locations; (7)Hired two new staff members in the USA; (8)Two new staff members were hired by the NGO in Nepal; (9)Launched the Nancy Williger Legacy Circle for planned giving; (10) Accomplished all 20th anniversary communications and event participation goals; (11)Hosted our first in-person Holiday Bazaar since 2019; (12)Configured a new online fundraising platform called Raisin; (13)Completed a redesign of the website; (14)Hosted the Executive Director and Board President of BSF for our strategic planning meetings with sponsors in the USA; and (15)Organized a sponsor trip to Nepal for the first time since 2019. CONTACT CENTER: The Contact Center, located in Kathmandu, is a day educational program which prepared 133 children of varying young ages to attend school for the first time. The population served includes children documented to be from low SES families such as itinerant workers or migrants. The new building was fully-furnished with supplies and all items needed for multiple classrooms. CHILD SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM: All children were sponsored and fully-engaged in school programs. Most of the children received extra tutoring and assistance in resolving learning losses due to the pandemic. Elementary School Children: We supported 28 children in Class UKG through Class 10 for both housing and education, and attending boarding schools (or emergency housing) throughout Kathmandu Valley. We supported another 27 children who lived at home for their education. 11th-12th Grade Children: We supported 10 children in 11th and 12th grades in various schools. Post 12th Grade Children: Through an individualized approach and our commitment to support each child into adulthood - despite the pandemic, most of our children progressed on to further education. Twenty-two children attended universities in the fields of social work, education, computer engineering, nursing, dental surgery, medicine, hotel, and business management. GRADUATES FROM OUR PROGRAM: We had five children who completed their education and were able to obtain jobs and become independent of Mitrata. HEALTHCARE CAREER STUDENTS: Because healthcare career college tuitions in Nepal are considerably higher than other college programs (ranging from 7,000 - 50,000 USD), Mitrata fundraises specifically to support children with these career goals. Two children completed their programs in 2022 to become practicing doctors dedicated to working in Nepal. MORE SUPPORT SERVICES: Many of our families continued to struggle financially and needed much more social, emotional, and environmental support. Throughout 2022, BSF staff kept our children engaged in school, provided emergency food and supply kits, and mitigated crisis situations through counseling and support. More healthcare services were established for the children who emerged from the pandemic with many medical issues. Annual medical, dental and vision checkups were performed for all the children. AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM: The after-school program reopened and serves children in our programs whose parents are not available after school for supervision. Children receive extra tutoring and enjoy activities. ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN USA: GOLD STAR AND BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU: We continue to be a Gold Star Transparency Candid and Better Business Bureau accredited charity. NON-VOTING ADVISORY AND YOUNG PROFESSIONALS BOARDS: We continued with eight Advisors and four Young Professional volunteers and 7 non-board committee members. SCHOLARSHIP FUND: We continued with this fund. With many children going on to college, and rising inflation rates, we recognize the need to help offset the extra costs to care for children of college age. Many colleges add extra fees for exams, preparatory courses, internships, and field trips, and often require laptop computers. ENDOWMENT FUND: We continued to manage this fund, which is held in perpetuity and invested, with the annual returns used to provide scholarships for our children. CULTURAL AND OVERSIGHT TRIPS: Nine sponsors and two staff members participated in the Sponsor Trip to Nepal in November, 2022. This was the first one since 2019 and much was accomplished. Filming for five new Mitrata videos was completed and meetings with all BSF staff and the children took place. Sponsors visited the programs and met with their sponsored children and explored the culture and beauty of Nepal. USA FUNDRAISING AND COMMUNITY AWARENESS EVENTS: Mitrata hosted two successful virtual fundraising events, The Trivia Night and Miles for Mitrata Kids, and an in-person Holiday Bazaar. The YPB hosted a Yoga in the Park event. 20th YEAR CELEBRATION: Mitrata hosted a celebration event of 20 years of operation which included a ceremony of gratitude to all sponsors and donors, gifts to sponsors, Nepali music and dancing, and multiple communications especially concerning the history of Mitrata and those who were mentors to the program. |
