| Form 990-EZ, Part III, Line 1 | - PRIMARY EXEMPT PURPOSE Oak Creek Watershed Council is dedicated to preserving the health and integrity of Oak Creek in northern Arizona. Oak Creek is one of the last remaining free-flowing streams in Arizona, and incredibly important to plants, animals and communities in the arid Southwest. Oak Creeks unique riparian ecosystem is constantly challenged by an increase in tourism and visitation, which results in large amounts of litter, habitat degradation and water contamination. Since 2004, the organization has leveraged stewardship, science, education and the power of volunteers to protect Oak Creeks flowing water and beautiful red rock scenery. Oak Creek Watershed Council seeks to mitagate human impacts and help ensure Oak Creek is protected for current and future generations by encouraging both the local community and visitors to act as stewards. The organization worked with more than a hundred volunteers in 2022. The value of these volunteer services is not reflected in the financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, however its volunteers and their contributions are imperative to the organizations ability to perform its purpose and mission. Board members and officers also serve as volunteers in that capacity. |
| Form 990-EZ, Part III, Line 28 | - PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS Oak Creek Watershed Council OCWC had a busy year in 2022 with increased visitation to the Sedona area and Oak Creek Canyon. Despite these challenges, OCWC removed thousands of pounds of trash and pet waste from sensitive riparian corridors along the creek. These efforts were possible due to strong partnerships with federal and state agencies, city governments, and the local community. In 2022, the organization held multiple impactful volunteer clean-up events. OCWC continued to build a new volunteer program, which mobilized volunteers to restore littered areas and collect important visitor use data. In total, 100 volunteers helped preserve the health and integrity of Oak Creek. The organization removed litter at popular day-use sites and areas where roadway pull-outs have been closed as a result of the Coconino National Forests Oak Creek Watershed Restoration Action Plan. The Plan identifies various activities to be implemented to improve water quality, watershed conditions, and wildlife habitat. OCWC actively helps implement these activities. The organization monitored the effectiveness of pull-out closures by tracking litter removed over time at each of these rehabilitated sites within Oak Creek Canyon. Similarly, in partnership with the National Forest Foundation and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, OCWC monitored the effectiveness of rehabilitated social trails. These were informal trails along Oak Creek Canyon that recreators had been using to get to the creek. Rehabilitation makes these trails natural space again. Stabilizing streambanks and hillsides encourages vegetation growth and provides habitat for streamside animals, while reducing soil erosion into the waterway. Oak Creek Watershed Council used repeat photography, trash pickup, and GPS mapping to understand restoration treatment effectiveness and visitor-use behaviors. During the summer of 2022, Oak Creek Watershed Council regularly monitored the water quality in Oak Creek Canyon, collecting water quality samples over high-use weekends and on mid-week, coinciding with other partners who sampled middle and lower sections of Oak Creek. Also during the year, the organization collected pet waste from receptacle stations it maintains at trailheads throughout the greater Sedona area, preventing it from washing into the creek. Pet waste is one of the leading contributors to E. coli contamination in our local waterways. Finally, Oak Creek Watershed Councils outreach program creates trash clean-up events to promote stewardship and protect the Oak Creek watershed. This outreach extends to collaborative efforts with the Coconino National Forest, City of Sedona, Slide Rock State Park, and multiple other collaborating agencies and individuals for annual clean-up events, trash removal, trail patrols, and water contamination monitoring.
