Briefly describe the organization’s mission: Our mission is to provide support and activities for the veterans and current active duty members of the 102nd Cavalry Regiment and their families. We also offer scholarships to members and their families. We are also actively engaged in activities intended to document, distribute, and preserve the history and legacy of the 102nd Cavalry since its inception in 1890.

	Essex Troop Scholarship Program: Each year, our organization offers four (4) $1000 scholarships to qualified applicants in direct support of their post high school education.

	Veterans' baseball Outing, Annual Unit Muster, Annual Unit Business Meeting, Annual Holiday Event, etc.: Our organization conducts a number of annual veterans and active duty events and activities for our members and their families.

	Regimental Heritage Initiative (RHI): Our association conducts various activities designed to educate the public while also fostering and preserving our unit heritage and legacy. Schedule D, Part III, Line 1	Our organization has unit uniforms and equipment that date back to our origins in 1890. Many of these items are on public display along with information on units members lost or wounded during wartime activation and deployments are also on display. We also maintain a large collection of original unit documents that date back to 1890 and include thousands of pages from the unit's deployment during WW2. Lastly, the unit was in possession of a large oil painting depicting "Washington at the Delaware that was left to the unit when our founder died in 1906. This painting was auctioned in 2022 to raise funds to support our unit legacy preservation activities.

The association had a painting of "Washington at the Delaware' that was given to us by our founder at his death in 1906. The painting was auctioned off in January of 2022 at Christie's in NYC to raise funds to support our ongoing Regimental Heritage Projects.	01-21-2022	31,000	The painting was auctioned o0ff on Friday, 21 January 2022 at Christie's Auction in NYC. The value was originally estimated to be between $10000 and $15000, but bids received pushed the painting to a hammer price of $118750. Form 990, Header, Line A	Our Association auctioned our painting of "Washington at the Delaware" to raise funds to support our regimental heritage and legacy preservation programs. The association netted $87,750 as a result. We also collected $2430 in ticket revenue for our Veterans' Baseball Game and our Holiday Meeting (note...these events cost a total of $4935). $3000 was paid to Trinity Web Media in 2022 for the initial work on the development of our new website. $4000 was distributed in 4 scholarships for the 2022 Essex Troop Scholarship Program (annual program). Unit history research was performed at the Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abeline , KS at a cost of $750. Unit legacy bricks and pavers were purchased at the National WW2 Museum in New Orleans, LA at a cost of $18000.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 6	We have officers, trustees and general association members
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7a	Our Officers and Trustees are elected by the general membership of the association at our Annual Business Meeting that is usually conducted in April of each year.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11b	The Treasurer provided our Senior Trustee all of the financial information required to accurately complete and file the Form 990. Given the challenges associated with filing a 990 versus our usual 990-N, it has taken an inordinate time to complete the 990, almost down to the extension deadline. We will provide copies of our completed and filed 990 at our next Officers and Trustees meeting in November, 2023. If edits are required, we will file an amended for 990.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12c	Most of the work needed to be performed to accomplish our mission and goals are performed by association members or committees formed of our members. The only outside providers that we use are food services, website development, phone and internet services, and providers of items that we need for our mission (i.e. Display cabinets, flowers for Memorial Day and Veterans' Day activities, rug repair and cleaning, etc.). I all cases, there are no conflicts of interest involved in these activities or expenditures.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19	Our Treasurer as well as our Financial Management Committee (FMC) provide detailed reports at each Officers and Trustees meeting. Our financial status is also provided to our general membership at our Annual Business Meeting (usually in April) and our Annual Unit Muster (usually in October). Otherwise, members as well as the general public can request any of our reports simply by asking for them. Our other policies are listed in our Constitution and By-Laws and available via our website.

Explanation:

In all past years, our association has held assets well below the $500K threshold, thereby allowing us to simply file the "postcard" return. In 2022, we barely exceeded the $500K threshold, and unit officers, working with our Treasurer, have been wrestling with the 990 form. We considered using a paid tax preparer but learned that his fee for filing, even with our completion of the IRS form 990, would be $1500. Our 2023 budget did not provide funds for this type of service given our previous simplified filing process. We originally completed the 990 forms with the intent to mail them in, only to find that we needed to file via a 3rd party service. The service we have been working with (Form 990 Online) is confusing and difficult to work with given the lack of accounting experience of our leadership team.
