	Health Care Payment - RPA addresses Medicare, Medicaid, and private sector health care financing issues. RPA leaders meet with representatives of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Carrier Medical Directors to address concerns about discrepancies in carrier policies, documentation requirements, and apparent trends in payment denials. RPA monitors the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MEDPAC), as well as congressional health care financing activities, and serves as a resource on kidney-related issues. As an active participant on the American Medical Association's Relative Value Update Committee (RUC), Practice Expense Advisory Committee (PEAC), and CPT Editorial Panel, RPA works to assure that work values for nephrology services are appropriately determined and that CPT codes accurately reflect nephrology clinical practice. Finally, RPA tracts problems related to reimbursement for nephrology services and payment denials experienced by members to determine trends and identify areas where RPA needs to take action.

	Quality Improvement - RPA is committed to ensuring quality care for patients with kidney disease. The Association works closely with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Forum of ESRD Networks, and the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ) to develop policies and procedures that result in an effective quality assessment and improvement program. RPA develops clinical practice guidelines and physician performance measures to improve the delivery of quality kidney care to patients. The Association coordinates these efforts with other organized medical groups as well as AHRQ and CMS. Patient safety is an important part of the RPA physician-patient equation. Through RPA's efforts in quality and accountability, patient safety has been highlighted as an important program initiative.

	Research - RPA promotes adequate funding for biomedical research on kidney disease by the National Institutes of Health, specifically the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). RPA supports medical treatment effectiveness and outcomes assessment research relating to kidney disease and advocates funding for this through AHRQ. Also, RPA has been instrumental in garnering support for the creation, implementation, and maintenance of the U.S. renal data system.

Form 990, Part III, Line 1	The Renal Physicians Association's exempt purpose is to: Promote optimal care utilizing the highest standards of medical practice for patients with kidney and related diseases; act as a national representative and resource for physicians engaged in the care of these patients and in the study of these disorders; and serve as a resource for the development of national health policy affecting kidney physicians and their patients.

Form 990, Part V, Line 2a:	The organization's W2s were issued by Human Resources Inc (HRI). There are a total of 10 W2s issued under HRI's EIN. RPA does not file federal employment tax returns under its own EIN.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 1a	The board of directors shall designate an executive committee. The executive committee shall exercise the authority of the board of directors in (a) managing the day to day affairs of the corporation, and (b) carrying out all policy decisions made by the board of directors.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 6	RPA's members consist of any person licensed to practice medicine in the United States who is engaged in the treatment of patients with kidney disease or in research activities involving kidney disease, nephrology fellows, and retired nephrologists. In addition, practice managers, advanced nurse practitioners, physician assistants and other nephrology professionals are also eligible for membership. The Board of Directors may also provide for other persons or categories of persons to be eligible for membership as deemed appropriate.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 7a	A Nominating Committee shall be selected by the Board of Directors each year. The Nominating Committee shall have at least three members. The Nominating Committee shall be composed of representatives of the Board of Directors and the membership-at-large and one member of the Nominating Committee shall at all times be a counselor. The election of directors shall take place via an electronic or mail ballot which shall be sent out with the approved list of nominees a minimum of 60 days prior to the date of the annual meeting. Members may cast their votes for or against the nominees listed on the ballot. Further, members may elect to write in other candidates' names.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 7b	Each member in good standing shall be entitled to one vote on each matter submitted to a vote of the members.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11b	Renal Physicians Association will provide a copy of the Form 990 to all members of the Executive Committee by request before it is filed. The form 990 will be reviewed by the Executive Director, President, Treasurer, and the Director of Finance before it is filed. The Board is provided a copy of the return prior to filing with the IRS.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12c	Renal Physicians Association maintains a written conflict of interest policy. All members of the Board of Directors are required to review this policy and provide the necessary disclosures on an annual basis, by responding to the official policy documents.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15a	The Executive Committee of the organization reviews benchmark data collected by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and the American Association of Medical Society Executives (AAMSE) in preparation for the performance review and salary determination for the RPA Executive Director. Comparable salaries for CEO's of similar size (budget), RPA type of association (individual physician membership), and geographic location of association headquarters (Washington, DC metro area) are reviewed by the Executive Committee to ensure appropriate alignment with like organizations. For other key employees, the Executive Director annually reviews benchmark data for similar positions that is also collected and published by ASAE and AAMSE to determine appropriate salary ranges for those staff members.
