| Form 990, Part III (Cont. 1) | Among the stories collected from the volunteers in 2022-2023 are the following: Story 1 from Maria who worked at SAME Cafe, a non profit cafe that creates community through healthy food access and provides healthy meals to everyone, regardless of ability to pay. "There's a huge difference between talking the talk and walking the walk, especially when it comes to caring for those on the margins. I was ready after years of education to finally see what it was like to walk the walk - serve people directly and be an advocate for them in whatever way I could. The core value of direct service and advocacy is a large part of what drew me to CVV from the start. Now, in my service year, I am lucky enough to work at SAME Café, where - like CVV - we value whole people. Unlike most of the business world, people are not numbers to us, nor are they problems. They are living, breathing humans with names, stories, values, failures, and inherent dignity too. As a volunteer coordinator at SAME, I work very directly with guests daily, explaining tasks and showing people how to help out in our space. Something I've held since day one as a personal conviction at SAME is that I'm not going to make someone struggle through a difficult or not-so-fun task like cleaning the bathroom. So, I roll up my sleeves and work alongside them. It not only makes the task more enjoyable, but also gives me the chance to really get to know our guests better. One day, an older guest was struggling to grasp how to roll silverware. So, instead of hurrying back to the kitchen to do something else, I sat across from him and we tag-teamed the job. I'd had a couple of conversations with him previously, but wanted to get to know him better. So, mid-roll, I looked up at him and asked "So, what are your biggest, wildest dreams?" His wrinkled, tired face lit up, "My dreams? Oh man, I don't know if anyone's asked me that before. I gotta think." Soon enough, he was explaining that he wants to save up for a house so that his 13 year old granddaughter can stay with him when she's in town. Then, another guest sitting across the café joined in and shared his dreams too. They flipped the question back to me and we talked, laughed, and dreamed together for a while. To me, this is direct service - to care enough to remember someone's name, sit with them, share dreams. This is advocacy - to roll up your sleeves and do the hard work, ask the questions that really matter." |
| Form 990, Part III (Cont. 2) | Story #2 from Lexie who worked at Stout Street Clinic, a health clinic providing health services to those experiencing homelessness: "I think about myself at orientation and how little I knew about myself and the population I would be serving. Through these last two months I have learned the importance of listening to understand and how authenticity can create a community of healing. I think back to a specific encounter in which I was out in the community doing street nursing. The nurse told the client "you are loved, I'm so glad you're alive. " I realized at this moment, many people do not have people who just listen and care for their needs. I've had so many instances where after a visit my patience thank me for just listening and asking questions to understand so I may be a healing presence through God. To me I was just doing with the nurse shed and how I would treat my friends. In these instances, I've learned the immense impact of treating a person with the God-given dignity that they have. Many of my patients do not get acknowledged or seen while getting care or when interacting with others. The least I can do is be a resource and a listening ear to acknowledge that their feelings are valid and that they are saying." |
| Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11b | The CVV Board of Directors used the following process in reviewing the Form 990 before it was filed: The CVV Finance and Administrative Manager prepared the Form 990. The Director and Board Treasurer reviewed the Form 990 for presentation to the Board and Committees. The Management Committee met, discussed, made corrections to and then approved the final 990 at their October meeting. The Form 990 was then presented to the Board for final review and approval in early November. |
| Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12c | Each committee and Board Member disclosed any conflicts of interest at their annual fall board meeting. |
| Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15 | The Board has determined that a full evaluation of the Director will be conducted every other year. Beginning October 1, 2022, Amanda Orta served as the Interim Director of the Organization and her salary was determined by the Board. Among other information the Board considered in determining the Directors' compensation package was the Colorado Non-Profit Association's annual salary and benefits survey. |
